Fox News is staring down the barrel of a $1.6 billion defamation claim after it failed to get the case against it by Dominion Voting Systems dismissed.
Is this really a “major” setback? All that happened is the judge didn’t dismiss the case, which was pretty unlikely to happen. I mean, I try not to indulge in wishful thinking, but most analyses of the case have been saying that all the necessary components for a successful defamation suit are there.
Ok, now that I’ve read the summary of the judge’s opinion, this is a major setback for Faux. But not because the judge didn’t dismiss the case, which wasn’t going to happen, but because the judge clearly gets the faux game. For instance:
“Fox’s news personnel repeatedly framed the issue as one of truth-seeking and purported to ground interview questions in judicial proceedings and evidence,” he added. “Reviewing the Complaint, the Court does not read Fox’s statements as mere statements of opinion.”
Insurrectionist just got 63 months in prison. Judge Chutkan ain’t fuckin’ around.
WASHINGTON — A Florida man was sentenced Friday to just over five years in prison for assaulting police officers during the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.
The sentence, of 63 months, was the longest one yet imposed among the more than 150 defendants who have pleaded guilty to taking part in the siege.
“It has to be made clear that trying to violently overthrow the government, trying to stop the peaceful transition of power, and assaulting law enforcement officers in that effort is going to be met with absolutely certain punishment,” said U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan.
His lawyer, Bjorn Brunvand, said Palmer deserved a reduction in sentence because he took responsibility for his actions. But prosecutors said he showed a lack of remorse in a misleading social media posting that solicited support after he pleaded guilty.
The posting said he acted in self-defense — that he threw fire extinguisher only after he was shot with the non-lethal round. Palmer admitted during Friday’s hearing that his claim of self-defense was false.
FOX is going to have to deal with this very public case. The ease with which they have steadily pushed the direction of their commentary to reflect their support of Trump and the GOP made it a slam-dunk to blab any number of falsehoods
I hope to hear of him jockeying for a squeegee spot at the Holland tunnel with Hannity, Carlson and Ingraham.
The judgment probably won’t be enough to give me that but, hey, a guy can dream.
