Former Defense Secretary Changes Story On When Exactly He Deployed National Guard On Jan. 6 | Talking Points Memo

And I believe that as the Commander of the DC NG there would already be plans, contingency plans for all sorts of scenarios. I mean isn’t this the very definition of war games?
And if Miller wanted to run that whole show why wasn’t his ass down there? Instead of in the rear with the gear. And this goes for Army Secretary McCarthy.

Donnie wanted to cut through red tape to move all of his priorities.
Apparently, stopping an insurrection on January 6 wasn’t one for him or at least some of his subordinates.

It is always so hard to differentiate between incompetence and malignant intent with these clowns.

Chicken/egg?

I’d love to hear what was going on between the WH and the Pentagon during the gap. We already know Trump was cheering his insurrectionists on, were there explicit instructions given to let it play out?

And drag Flynn’s brother in front of Congress, we need answers about why he was on the call and actively advocating to block the deployment.

Because Trump having lost was going to be out of office anyway unless he could generate complete chaos.

Which is why Hogan had the MD ready to go on the border? Or did I get that wrong?

If he did, it was from the grave. Those missiles only need 30 minutes of flight from central Russia to central US.

If memory serves, it was the Pentagon who told Hogan not to send in the MDNG troops. So it seems like a pretty equivalent consideration (albeit with the caveat that Trump would have to federalize the MDNG troops before he could boss them around, which was not the case with DCNG).

As quoted in the story, he first testified:

As reported, minutes later he testified:

Which version is true? Did someone explicitly call him out on the contradiction? Ocasio-Cortez and Maloney aren’t lawyers, but Jamie Raskin, Katie Porter, and Raja Krishnamoorthi are all on the Oversight Committee and I can’t believe they would let him slide on those discrepancies.

His problem is that he had crafted a line that made him look reasonably good: He gave the order to someone else at 2:00. After that, it was their fault. Spin, span, spun. Then, AOC neatly skewered his story and he was stuck trying to deal with the mess.

My assumption is that Trump made it clear to numerous people that the insurrectionists were not to be hassled too much. As always, he made it clear in less than explicit ways and not written down and if things went south, he’d be sure to deny it. Thus, the military didn’t act until they had a clear command from someone: their asses were covered. Given the closeness of the race and the GOP desire to punish anyone who denies the big lie, they had some reason to make sure their heinies were covered.

But saying, I stood by while the crowd was rioting, killing policemen and threatening to attack or kill VPs, congresspeople and others, because I wanted the paperwork to cover my ass to be signed and sealed is not going to sound good. Or, this sounded like a no-win situation for me and my career, so I hoped someone else would step in first. They weren’t really going to hang Mike Pence in that gallows they built, were they?

Coincidentally, of course, the same day that all the living SECDEFs send a strong message to Miller that he needed to stop fucking with the transition…

A perfect example of why ‘preparation after the fact’ is never the best way to manage a mob.

Because that’s gonna open a whole can of worms?

Already reported that Trump told him on the fifth that he would need 10k troops the next day.

Whose side were they supposed to show up on, and is Miller the accidental hero here who blocked troops from deploying until the outcome was a foregone conclusion… By the time they showed up in any numbers, the Capitol was largely cleared by the reinforcements from the VA State Police and D.C. Police, after all.

Does anyone know where Chris Miller landed after 01/20? Because I’m in the mood to makes some calls, or write some letters to employers.

He changed his language to fit with the definitions being used by others in the hearing, once the formal distinction was pointed out to him. It’s not a big deal, and it’s not a big difference.

Thanks for such a thorough explanation. I agree with most of your comment although this:

I don’t agree with - I don’t think it was that close, although certainly it was close in some places.
