Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced on Tuesday that he expects there will be action on the Electoral Count Act reform before the new Congress takes over in January.
“I expect an omnibus will contain priorities both sides want to see passed into law, including more funding for Ukraine and the Electoral Count Act,” Schumer said.
The Electoral Count Act will definitely pass: the Republicans want Kamala Harris to be limited in Jan. 2025. And Moscow Mitch knows it has to pass now, while reasonable people are in both houses, because once the maggots takeover House, nothing will pass.
Once again, it’s left up to Democrats to be responsible, while Republicans try to burn down the country.
The reforms has been framed as “anti-Trump” by some MAGA Republicans, bolstering concerns that it might not receive support from the 10 GOP senators needed to avoid a filibuster.
Hell yes, they’re “anti-Trump”! Criminals are generally opposed to effective law enforcement. Would-be insurrectionists are opposed to strengthening the constitutional order.
ETA: … which all of those fucking “MAGA Republicans” swore to support and defend.
What has been frightening about the last few days is that “we the people” now know how many of our elected representative from the Rethuglican party are actually treasonous criminals who deserve to be expelled from Congress and indicted, tried, and jailed.
It’s amazing to think that TPM could be the major factor in pushing ECA reform over the finishing line. Their publication of various Meadows’s texts certainly have caught the eye of the Majority Leader.
We kinda already knew it - these just validate our belief.
I don’t know, yet, whether it will lead to any further action. For that, we’ll have to stay tuned. In this environment, it’s less likely than it might’ve been ten years ago. But we’ll just have to wait and see.
It’s certainly lighting a fire under people from both sides, pushing them to action (or to run screaming from the room). Emboldening the Democrats for one last push before the new year and something of a sucker punch to the GOP members (to which they should have had early warning since they received so many requests for comment).
To jump metaphors, TPM lifted up the rock and all the creepie crawlies started scattering. “You don’t have the full context!” “I was just frustrated!” “People were saying lots of crazy things back then!” “Locusts!”
The 34 GOP legislators named should be facing sedition charges.
These morons didn’t just complain about the election, they wanted lawful election results thrown out and / or “MARSHALL” law imposed on the country so they could “reinstall” T***** as president.
I guess it depends on how culpable you hold him for COVID deaths and others. He’s not actually pulling any triggers on 5th Ave (he’s a total coward and would probably choke if he actually held a gun), but he’s certainly indifferent to the pain and suffering he caused.
Exactly. That’s why we shouldn’t pass it now, so there’s at least a chance of heading off election theft in 2024 when, say GA or WI sends a fake elector slate to put a GQP president in place.
Unilaterally disarming is stupid.
It’s kind of a stupid law to have to pass, but experts all say that the VP doesn’t have this power now. The Right is only arguing about it because the text from 1887 is vague by today’s standards and usage. The ECA, as it stands, wouldn’t be changing the VP’s role, it would be clarifying that the role is ministerial and that, as such, the VP cannot unilaterally throw out a delegation’s electoral votes.
No one’s unilaterally disarming, we’re just removing the possibility of doubt so that the Jeffrey Clarks can’t waste everyone’s time trying to present an inanity as a possibility. If they fail to pass this and there are shenanigans with WI’s delegation in 2024, VP Harris still won’t be able to throw out the delegation. That’s what the various lawsuits are for before it gets to Jan 6. If there was a real case, it would handled there, not during the Congress’s ceremonial ratification.
