California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is staring down a recall effort that will likely lead to an election for his political survival sometime before the end of the year.

CA repubs can’t get one of their own elected as governor (mid 1980’s was the last one) so they have to resort to bullshit like this. Anyway, there are plenty of Democrats backing the governor including Joe and Kamala, but if people want a governor named Jenner, go for it.

They are already fighting with each other over the money. Candidates are using the recall to raise funds, but hanging on to the money for self-promotion. It is gonna be a circus, from every vantage point. An expensive circus. Every GOP body wants to be the next Trump and get rich whilst whining about libs. I think (and hope) the end result will be greater disfunction among GOP in California.

I agree…I don’t see how you could possibly be wrong.

I’m reasonably sure this recall effort will fail miserably and by a very wide margin. The Republicans who pushed it will then look even more stupid for wasting all this time and money. As a result, Republicans will become even less popular in California, if such a thing is possible.

That said, the maskless birthday party was a really stupid thing for him to do. I hope whoever arranged it was fired on the spot.

The vast majority of recall signatures came from the state of Jefferson.

The California Association of Clerks and Elections Officials estimated that the total cost for the recall election could reach $400 million, a drain on state and county funds already depleted by administering the 2020 elections amid the pandemic.

That’s money that could have been spend on feeding the poor, protecting groundwater, fighting fires, building affordable housing, or just unclogging the court system. The next election is next year anyway.

Marrying Kimberly Guilfoyle can make one question Newsome’s judgement.

Can Stormy run?

“I can empathize because, like all of you Californians, I too have been fucked by Trump.”

Yet another venue for Trump/politics…It has little to do with “policy”

Or “service”
Or “benefit”

A few points from a Californian:
Newsom comes across as a douchie, dilettante, kind of like your annoying, know-it-all cousin at the family barbecue.
Grey Davis was a huge zero that everyone hated.
Schwarzenegger was sunny and cheerful, and not a crazy right-wing Republican, so acceptable to a broad swath of the electorate.
When David was recalled, the country wasn’t still recovering from a catastrophic 4-years of Trump presidency.
Davis also managed to keep strong Democratic candidates off the ballot, which made the vote a choice between him and Schwarzenegger. There’s no one like Schwarzenegger on the ballot. Jenner is famous, but not likeable.
I’m not super worried for Newsom, even though I’m not a fan.

The point is the cruelty and to waste money. They would rather flush money down the toilet than spend it on kids who need to eat or house the homeless. They don’t care if they win the election or not. They just want to own the libs.

All I can say is I’m glad that Newsom is taking it seriously now because not showing up to court dates is not smart and easily avoidable.

LIkewise the French Laundry debacle - didn’t have to happen, easily avoided.

Kind of gives a new perspective to “cost of ownership.”

My predictions:

  1. the election will once again be stolen by democrats.
  2. republican operatives will make great shit-piles of money.
  3. Trump will figure out a way to also cash in on the RWNJ/GQP money pool.
  4. folks in rural California will continue to whine, threaten session and generally behave like the snowflakes they claim we are.

I can only hope that California learned a sober lesson from the Gray Davis recall and installation of Schwarzenegger as governor - and then the incomprehensible reelection of the same. The best thing I can say is that I’ve seen worse governors than the Terminator (e.g., George “Duke” Deukemejian - god what an idiot or, nearly as bad, Pete Wilson). Installation of a celebrity governor - or any republican as governor - would be a serious problem for a state facing real problems that need solutions. Gavin Newsome is no prize himself - but let’s wait and see a serious primary challenge in the Democratic party.

Californians must pay millions for a cynical performance doomed to fail.

Meanwhile, California covid hospitalizations at an all-time low:

Ahnold wouldn’t even qualify for membership in today’s GQP. Not a genius, but centrist and sane. I’m at least thankful that Newsome’s missteps have probably killed any hope of taking his political career up to the next level, though I don’t think we should be overconfident about his prospects of overcoming the recall, given Newsome’s capacity for really stupid decision-making.

That was so stupid. I think it followed the guidelines in that county at that time. But stupid, stupid, stupid. But if covid continues calm, here he is likely OK. The other left-field disasters that could change the mood, we are going to have even more massive fires before the election.
