Five Points On the Floridians Ensnared by DeSantis’s New Election Fraud Unit - TPM – Talking Points Memo

As DeSantis works behind the scene to disenfranchise Democrats from voting in Florida. It hasn’t been perfected yet but he’s not giving up.

That was an era of the American spirit. We don’t have much of that anymore. DeSantis will do whatever he needs to stay in power. He, like most GOP’ers realizes that election rigging is not about voter fraud but election manipulation at the state level. Watch him.

This is typical GOP logic in operation.

No price is too high for someone else to pay when it advances the party’s interests. As usual with actions of this kind, the ongoing propaganda value of the action taken, the constant stream of reporting that it generates, and the right wing grievance “churn” is the entire point. The ultimate outcome isn’t going to be relevant to the effort.

And, the bonus for DeSantis is that the state of Florida pays the entire legal bill.

I think DeSantis has got exactly what he wants. The more news this makes the more chilling effect it will have on felon voting and voting by minorities in general.

Perfect Republican setup: invite people to do A, then prosecute them for doing A.
Won’t estoppel bar the cases in which state officials told the people registering that they were qualified to vote? If the voters are being charged, why aren’t those who gave the wrong advice being prosecuted for their role?

Or a Kafkaesque nightmare…

Before the law sits a gatekeeper. To this gatekeeper comes a man from the country who asks to gain entry into the law. But the gatekeeper says that he cannot grant him entry at the moment. The man thinks about it and then asks if he will be allowed to come in later on. “It is possible,” says the gatekeeper, “but not now.” At the moment the gate to the law stands open, as always, and the gatekeeper walks to the side, so the man bends over in order to see through the gate into the inside. When the gatekeeper notices that, he laughs and says: “If it tempts you so much, try it in spite of my prohibition. But take note: I am powerful. And I am only the most lowly gatekeeper. But from room to room stand gatekeepers, each more powerful than the other. I can’t endure even one glimpse of the third.”

Donald Trump is a fascist. Ron DeSantis is a fascist. Pick your poison, Repubs!

DeSadist reminds me very much of Benito Mussolini. May he meet the same fate.

(I wanted to post the pic of Il Duce hanging by his heels, but thought it might be too graphic).

Unfortunately, there isn’t any one place they can even go to find out what they owe. Each jurisdiction, each county has their own accounting and much of it isn’t online.

There was a huge push when this happened to pay off their fines.

Oh, and there are many, many more potential illegal voters in Florida, including from The Villages. The few that they have prosecuted are getting deferred sentences or probation. And they were 100% deliberately voting illegal. But hey, mostly a bunch of old white dudes, so…

I know and that’s my point. The state made this a requirement after people voted to allow felons to get the franchise back. This requirement wasn’t in the amendment’s language that the voters voted on.
For the state to now say this must be done, then it should be up to the state to create the mechanism to track the dollars owed.
I remember reading an example where a suspect was arrested in one county, and held in custody until someone from the next county over who asked for this person to be picked up, got there. If the suspect was convicted then they would owe money to the county the arrested and held them for the second county. And would owe the second county too.

Step by step DeSantis is militarizing public government, gutting education at all levels, isolating minorities, and in general setting himself up to become an unfettered dictator. He must be stopped.

The best thing those of us who do not live in Florida can do is to stop traveling there, totally. Revenue from tourism is a major supporter of their corrupt government.

De Santis truly is De Satan.

You left the word “vile” out of your sentence. He sure isn’t giving out hugs to gain an audience.

DeSantis is hardly “Satin,” smooth as it is, he is more like “Satan!”

Thank you for the correction.

That’s what I thought you meant, but didn’t want the TPM community think something was “off.”

He’s doing his trump impersonation.
Odd that the LEO folk behind him don’t break up laughing.
