When Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced in March last year that he would be sending hundreds of Texas National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, he spurred a wave of posturing from Republican governors over “securing” the border. Following Texas’ lead, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent Florida state law enforcement officers and National Guard troops to Texas. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem sent her state’s troops as well — funded by a Tennessee auto scrap billionaire.
Dunno. Every time I see that something has “backfired” or been declared “disastrous” when an elected Republican is involved, it increases their popularity and/or reassures re-election.
This is Tejas, people. Nothing too dumb, imbecilic, vulgar and just plain wrong is enough to give anyone pause there.
I confess that my first reaction to the article wasn’t dismay or disgust. It was “wait, the dumb SOB didn’t have the mother wit to quietly wind down the operation again after the first harvest of headlines and camera angles?”
But I suppose that, if he had, then West would be attacking him over that, instead.
It’s ridiculous that a grown person with real responsibilities would make such a statement. They’ve all turned into cartoon characters. This used to be how the fringe talked while those in charge at least pretended to be statesmen.
Absolutely everything Abbott says or does is best understood as feeding raw meat to the primary voters. He’ll cruise to a win with more than 60% of the primary vote anyway, but he wants to be the prezinitial nominee in '24, and he can’t be that if he can’t win Texas.
