The FSB looks at our nutters and sees opportunity. Just like they did with Trump.

create black nationalist movements across the American South

It would be exceptionally difficult for our enemies to do this in a racially just society where our AA countrymen felt that they were benefitting fairly.

Yeeee… at the least we’re tracking all the nutters now.

Quixotic, maybe, but their wild gamble on Trump sure paid off! Still, they seem to be so bad at American culture — as if commemorating Russian sacrifices to defeat Nazi Germany was a thing that would sway people’s opinions about Putin’s Russia? Most Americans don’t have the same essentialist view of Russians as a race, so that wouldn’t move the needle at all. They seem to be the victims of their own propaganda about how simple Americans are.

It’s codenamed ‘GOP’, for ‘Glorifier’s Of Putin’.

That’s one of the massive differences between Russian intelligence like the FSB, and Western intelligence like the CIA or MI6. The latter are much more devoted to discovering things – “discovering truth”, however imperfectly – so much so that “gathering intel” is a synonym for reconnaissance and discovery in everyday language. But in the East intelligence is predominantly about shaping truth. So the sorts of influence operations the FSB are known to engage in are arguably their main task. That, incidentally, is also why every revolution on earth counter to Russian interests is assumed (by Russia) to have been fomented by the CIA. Because that’s what the FSB would do.

With all that in mind, saying FSB would try influence ops in the US is like saying water is wet. But man, it figures they would expend effort on the weirdest freaks. I guess when you’re deep in the intelligence bubble you start to lose all perspective.

Good point. We know social media can be a very powerful political weapon, but anyone using it as such has to know what he’s doing.

I don’t understand why there is not a travel ban on Russia. We are banning Tiktok but not Kaspersky? Many US corporations are skirting the sanctions by working with Russian shell companies in Cyprus and else. These operations should be shut down and their officers arrested.

The world’s criminals are harvesting the stupidity of America’s conservatives. They are easy marks.

It’s projection. Soviet/Russian security has always been unduly terrified of dissident political and ethnic groups, so they support and promote dissident political and ethnic groups abroad as tools to undermine adversary nations. And sometimes it works. Not often, but sometimes.
