A panel of three federal judges rejected the new Alabama district map drawn by the state’s Republican-controlled legislature on Monday in two lawsuits against Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill (R) alleging that the district lines had been racially gerrymandered.
Funnily enough, the election of Donald Trump was not a signal that every institution without exception would now permit the most blatant discrimination the racists could think to devise. It wasn’t open season. But it certainly seemed that way, so they’re taking every shot they can. It must be puzzling, when this happens. They probably have that expression you see on dogs who got yelled at without knowing why.
Republicans really aren’t doing all that well with their gerrymandering efforts. They’re not picking up nearly as many seats as everybody thought they would. In fact, it sounds to me like they’ll wind up with a net loss of seats. That’s probably because they did so much gerrymandering in 2010 that there’s just nowhere else to go with it when all the population growth is coming from urban areas that typically vote Democratic. What should be especially concerning to them is that the demographics are only going to make it even harder in 2030.
Unfortunately, population growth only matters if everyone gets to vote. With Voting Rights stymied, and their base energized, Republicons are in great shape for 2022. Of course, Dems. have do have Darwin on our side. So there’s that.
On the bright side, the GOP has given up trying to persuade voters, and all its chips are now piled on “mind control and electoral fuckery.” True, there is a chance that they win, and if they do then they bankrupt the casino. But they’re not hedging their bets and we know exactly what’s at stake – hopefully enough people are sentimentally attached to this “representative democracy” thing that they can be prevented from winning.
Well those demographics will also reflect that the Republicans weren’t that keen on keeping their voting base safe from the COVID.
And with all the Trumpers that will soon be elected/re-elected in state legislatures I will be interested to see what happens with UE benefits, education shortages, kids who lost both parents-all kinds of implications with that scenario, and then of course their changes to voting.

… … … …
So racism survives in the Alabama legislature.
As expected.
Several courts around the country have tossed redistricting maps for various reasons. And the changes seem to benefit democrat votes which is a good thing.
If I may ask, how did you get the link to appear with the image? I couldn’t make it work for mine. Kept just showing the url (linked, but no image), which is why I put a static image in there separately.
