Leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci on Friday disagreed with President Donald Trump’s claim at a news conference just a day before that the country is victoriously winding down in its battle with coronavirus.
Reality will intrude on this one.
Good to see Fauci give this level of candor on MSNBC this morning. Hope he does so on CNN later today. His hands aren’t perfectly clean for March/April, but he can do a lot now to avoid Trump from spreading more political disinformation in the last weeks of this campaign.

Not fast enough. If people keeled over as soon as they were infected, even the ignorant and willfully blind would probably take notice. But the time (and physical distance) lag betwen Sturgis and possibly 250,000 infections, for example, makes it easy for them to dismiss the connection or claim the numbers are made up.
I don’t expect to get jostled around a spittle-flecked mosh pit before the end of 2021 (or, frankly, ever again), but a fairly safe 1/4-capacity baseball game would be awfully welcome next spring. That would be a long way toward the normalcy that I think would take everybody’s nerves down a notch.
Mind, next spring is a long way away.
Given the latest projections, another 250,000 Americans alive today will be dead from COVID by then.
This is how scientists talk about what is going on…though there would be another component, discussing that it’s people who are responsible for the new plateau at 40k infections, and that’s due to the spread of misinformation and propaganda by selfish assholes, including Trump. Just imagine if we had a president who was backing up the scientists speaking like this…we’d probably still have the selfish assholes but their influence would have been far, far less, hopefully isolated enough that they wouldn’t be able to do the damage they did.
A little over four months from now, we can have that government once again, but only if people take voting seriously and rise up against Trump and the Republicans nationwide. That’s really our only hope to get back to a place where facts, competence, and honor matter.
