I lived in Tennessee for several years and find myself totally unsurprised by the GOP’s behavior. I am, however, a bit surprised that they are experiencing such resistance. P’raps things have changed somewhat there since the late 60’s. Hope so!

How is the state Supreme Court picked, by votes or appointment?
And what about the Governor and two US Senators. If the majority of the state did not think like this, would Marsha Blackburn be a US Senator?
And the other US Senator, Bill Hagerty, is it true he is one of the most loyal of all Trumpers?
Did not current Governor Bill Lee recently sign the bill permitting “permitless carry”.
The point is while 40% of the nation is and has always from the founding of the Republic been “wack jobs”, they are the majority in several states and the vast majority of the Republican Party.
What would the result be if you asked your average White Tennessian if Blacks should be able to vote?
Oh, and speaking of the Supreme Court, I hope the state of my birth, Wisconsin, does good today.

When I see a bunch of people marching into the gallery of what is arguably the legislature where the GOP is at its absolute worst (bottom five, anyway) in the nation and shout “FASCISTS! FASCISTS! FASCISTS!” during a brazenly unlawful, anti-democracy action, I don’t know whether I’m filled with hope or despair.
Hopeful that small-d democrats are seeing past the MSM normalizing bamboozlement and, despite the MSM normalizing bamboozlement, seeing that we are in last ditch of a war on democracy that’s been rolling forward since Bush v. Gore.
The despair is because, well, damn, getting older and realizing that was really hoping it wasn’t going to be the kind of century it’s been so far.

I suspect the primary motivation here is that it’s a means to legitimize and downplay Jan 6th, and force Democrats into a position of defending behavior that, if you squint reaaaaaaaaaallly hard and are sufficiently motivated, looks kinda sorta like Jan 6th.

Because it equates what was clearly a peaceful protest about a current legislative issue with an attempted coup based in bullshit conspiracy theories. Equation works both directions: it “worsens” the interpretation of the TN protest, while simultaneously sanitizing the interpretation of Jan 6th. When Democrats argue that expulsion is inappropriate in this circumstance, the obvious rejoinder will be “then why are there hundreds of Jan 6th patriots rotting in JAIL?! Democrats are authoritarian hypocrites!”

A mishmash of the two.
The justices are appointed by the governor and then elected every eight years on a ―yes-no retention vote . They represent each of the state’s grand divisions – West, Middle and East Tennessee. By constitutional mandate, the court normally meets in Nashville, Jackson and Memphis.
They sometimes meet in Knoxville, too—it was the first state capital, after all.
I happen to know the recently-retired Chief Justice, Gary Wade, and knew his predecessor, Riley Anderson, from my childhood. One a Republican (old school) and one a Democrat.
The state supreme court is not particularly Trump-friendly, but it tends not to get involved in redistricting issues.
Tennessee is about 60% GOP and 40% Democratic, with all four of our major metro areas quite blue.
