Upset that there might soon be an end to the debt ceiling hostage-taking they’d been cheerleading for months, House Freedom Caucus members tried to torpedo the compromise bill’s passage in the House last week. When it became clear that their plot wouldn’t work — Democrats could get the bill through the House without the right-wing votes — they went for McCarthy’s jugular: his speakership.
Particularly when you have no one who can replace him. Currently they’re still in the phase of the operation where they are threatening to beat up McCarthy if he gives in to their demands. Next, they’ll probably go for threatening not to beat up McCarthy if he doesn’t give in to their demands. We can only hope this whole Freedom Caucus tantrum ends before they get to the Other Other Operation stage.
As hollow as McCarthy is, they don’t have even a blow-up doll to put up in his place, so their posturing has no bite.
members have been on the hunt for any and all opportunities to not just flex their power as the most rebellious members of the House majority, but to also loudly message to their constituents that they are, in fact, the most conservative of them all
Maybe their constituents loudly messaged back, “don’t be idiots!”
The problem the Freedom Caucus has is who would replace McCarthy? The GOP has a bare majority and it took McCarthy 15 ballots to win. They ditch McCarthy, who will step up and who will win? Scalise promoted and voted for the bill, too. So, they’d need a pretty extreme member and that person would need close to every GOP vote.
I keep imagining the SNL skit of trying to find someone to replace him! Would almost like to see it play out on the House floor. Except, that really would harm the country by delaying actual governing.
Yeah, it’s a bit of a weird dichotomy where the “People’s House” is ruled by a despot (in terms of power), without whom nothing can be done. If there is no Speaker, it’s just about impossible to vote on any bill.
I suppose it’s good that the nihilists haven’t figured out the damage they could deal that way. They still want to be the “guys in charge,” not merely the ones who bring everything to a stand-still.
Their biggest problem is that no one wants the job of Speaker right now. So, from here on out what they will focus on are Biden crime family conspiracies, the southern border, LGBTQ, banning books, banning abortion nationwide. I must add that if they did their jobs legislating, sane and humane immigration legislation might be crafted on a bi-partisan basis. But they are only interested in being cruel and harsh.

*Yet now that the dust has settled, hose threats seem to largely have just been talk.
Rather typical of the GQPers, don’t you think? All talk and little to show for it.
I’m fairly sure this has already been covered previously, but I’ve slept (some) since then.
One of the key concessions they won from McCarthy in January was the ability of a single member to, at any time, call for a redo of the speaker election…
Must the single member be among the majority party of the House, or is it ANY single member, including Dems? That is, whenever the Republican’ts are about to do something evil, could Beloved Congresswoman Pelosi (Jeffries, AOC, or take your pick) issue such a call for the Speakership’s re-re-reelection? Not exactly a senatorial filibuster, but it might be useful?
ETA: the video of the flying squirrel faking its own crime scene and death is one for the ages, @sandi!!
This is hilarious. The Freedom Caucus is preventing Rs from advancing their own bills.
Ten House Freedom Caucus members have voted against a rule to set floor debate on a bill to impose more oversight on federal rules and to prohibit the federal government from banning gas stoves. Scalise now in talks on floor with the members as their bills at risk of collapsing
ETA: Rather than oust McCarthy, they will gum up the entire R agenda. HA!
A bloc of Republican hardliners took down the GOP leadership’s push to move on two bills this week, a move they said was retaliation for Speaker McCarthy’s deal with President Joe Biden to suspend the national debt limit. The procedural vote was 206-220.
Probably just as well. Kev would be re-nominated like the 15 previous times, and it’s anyone’s guess as to what ridiculousness he’d have to promise the Freedumb Caucus to get that gavel back.
Biden has given McCarthy cover in exchange for the debt ceiling vote. McCarthy looked like the deal maker and keeps the Speakership, and Biden smiles all the way home.
If the Far-right was able to force a vote, Jeffries would be a contender. None on the right want to go through the bloody effort again looking like fools to elect someone who is more of a loser than McCarthy.
When it’s all said and done, ‘Joltin’ Joe’ gets the win.
