Facebook Oversight Board OKs Trump Ban But Says It Should Be Reviewed Within 6 Months | Talking Points Memo

A panel of outside experts Facebook tapped to review its decision to block President Trump for the content he posted after the insurrection said Wednesday that the initial decision to restrict his access was appropriate. However, the so-called oversight board questioned the move to ban him from the platform indefinitely, as the company had failed to lay out a “a clear, published procedure” for imposing an indefinite suspension.

… unless the account was sharing breastfeeding photos. Boobs are worse than Hitler.

So when does this outside board expect the leopard to change its spots?

Just kicking the can down the road until the former guy disappears up his very large, very powerful asshole.

In no way do I admire the craven technique Facebook leadership is taking to get there, but the end result is fine. I suspect he’ll never be back.

I was on a 3rd party comment board that required FB sign in to comment.
During the Tara Reade nonsense someone asked about her alleged past grifting.
In response I provided a link to a URL that had her history with the courts laid out in a timeline.
Within minutes I was told I violated TOS (no warnings) and that FB account was, poof!, deleted.
I assumed I was swarmed by the bros. When I went to appeal I was told to suck eggs.
Fortunately it was one of my burner accts, I said/did nothing offensive, but I got no review board.

F*ck FB. Time to start treat tech/media giants like 19th/20th trusts. Break 'em up.

Eyeroll, I seem to remember a 22 yr old was trying to sell Pelosi’s lap top to Putin.

Can we stop with this generational nonsense. I blame the Millennials

Absofuckinglutely!
Our laws and policies are still far behind the reality of the tech giants. Time for them to join the 21st century.
Let Biden and his team be the incarnation of BOTH Roosevelts: the New Deal one and the Trust Busting one.

I’m guessing it requires money - lots of it.

Recap from my post in the other thread: I think this was just theatrics to keep up the appearance of fairness. The decision to reinstate or permanently ban Trump will be up to Zuckerberg, like it always has been.

No idea what Zuck’s decision will be, but it will probably be influenced by whatever threat he’s feeling from the Biden administration and Congress with concerns about “Big Tech.” It’s obviously not a 1st Amendment issue. FB would be justified in a permanent ban as long as Trump keeps mouthing off about a stolen election. That’s tacit incitement for further violence.

The good thing about the ban is that it removes one of Trump’s main fundraising tools. Twitter was for staying relevant, FB was for fundraising, and siphoning small dollar donations away from other Republicans and GOP PACs.

How absolutely pathetic this is. FB is having to review the posts of a former PRESIDENT OF THE USA because he is such a known nasty, rotten, lying POS that his posts don’t pass the decency test. They have already shredded their own policies repeatedly to benefit the Reich-wingers but Trump is even worse.

After it eats their faces?

The way I read their decision, it’s not so much them expecting the former guy to start being nicey-nicey, but instead them expecting Facebook to get its act together and come up with some clear, consistent standards for handling this kind of thing.

Which is somewhat more probable than the first thing. Still wouldn’t bet on it, though.

My issue is that I don’t think anyone has a right or property interest in access to any social media outlet. Trump violated the terms of service multiple times and presumably only got away with his because he was POTUS (yes, we can argue with this, but that’s not the point). FB gets what they deserve (as does Twitter) but I don’t think they owe anyone an explanation as to why Trump is permanently banned or how he can return. It should be sufficient to say he is permanently banned for multiple terms of service violations.

As a practical matter, what could change to make him eligible for reinstatement? “He seems nicer now” “We think he has learned his lesson” It’s all silly on it’s face.

I didn’t see the word “pivot” in regard to the 6 month review. Y’know, people can change.

Okay. He can go back on after he’s dead. That will be just fine. He can start posting then, and he probably will.
