TOKYO (AP) — The medical community in Japan is moving toward a consensus that holding next year’s Tokyo Olympics may hinge on finding a coronavirus vaccine.
“The other half is manufacturing enough doses and getting these into people across the world. How would prioritization be done?”
It’s not just the athletes who would have to be bumped to the head of the queue . It’s also tens of thousands of Oly volunteers, every attendee, and everyone who transports, houses, feeds, or otherwise caters to the athletes and attendees.
There are several different vaccines being developed. Normally costly mass production only begins after a vaccine is proven to be safe and effective. In this case however, mass production is likely to occur before the trials are completed, so that mass immunization can start right away once the data shows that it works.
Some of the vaccines being developed [mRNA based] don’t have any manufacturers that can produce on a mass scale. It will take time to create these production facilities, should these vaccines prove most effective.
Come hell or high water business will demand that the games be held. Then a few weeks later after fans fall ill and a few athletes die it will be “No one could have seen that coming”.
