Ray Mabus, President Barack Obama’s former Navy secretary, slammed President Donald Trump on Monday morning for interfering in the case of Eddie Gallagher, a Navy SEAL who was charged with war crimes.
“This just dishonors the military so much, and it causes chaos and confusion,” Mabus told MSNBC host Hallie Jackson. “It undermines accountability, it undermines the rule of law, it undermines good order and discipline in the military.”
Just because Trump likes the idea that the military is his bloodthirsty private mercenary Praetorian Guard, doesn’t mean the military likes to think of themselves that way. Well, okay, some would be thrilled. But most members of the armed services must find his interference revolting.
And he’d really like it if their intelligence branch would look into a little thing in Ukraine involving some energy company and the son of one of the folks running to be his opponent in the next election.
We destroyed the Republic when we got rid of the draft.
We should bring it back. It’s an unpopular opinion but the draft was how democracies fight wars. Now we have a standing imperial volunteer army and nobody much cares what they do.
“Trump’s putting it to those fucking commanders, who I hate, too. Now we can do whatever we want. Bar’s open and you’re free to use your power and weapons however you want. Raping and pillaging optional.”
