Since Newt castrated the congress in the 90’s it would surprise me if more than half of them even know what the law is. Most of the GOP are just empty suites there to pull whatever the reactionary lever of the day is, along with tax cuts.
One of the more aggravating aspects of this legal farrago is that Flynn has gotten more due process than the next hundred federal criminal defendants combined. Think of all the hearings and motions and court time and judge time that have gone into charges that were not complicated to prove. Hundreds of hours devoted to this one man while other defendants cool their heels in jail or struggle to find able defense attorneys. Everyone deserves their day in court with a good lawyer and a judge who cares about the proceedings, but most don’t get that and Flynn has gotten that a dozen times over.
I suspect Sullivan will probably choose to sentence the next time he has to get someone to reaffirm a guilty plea for the second time.
Okie doke!
This sentence was heading somewhere when it got cut off. Who edits this stuff???
“It was only after he was taken ‘completely by surprise’ by the Court’s warning that he might face more serious consequences that Flynn.”
Nice to see him standing up for the rule of law and the courts. Both have been so battered by this administration.
Courts rely on the confidence of the people, and undermining that confidence gets us on a short trip to authoritarianism. Trump eagerly waiting at the end of the line. It’s time to get him out along with Mitch. What a loathsome duo. I can’t wait for them both to lose in November.
Just a matter of time before sleazy Johnny Roberts, the dirty christian conservative rapist, perjurer and boofer Barty Kavanaugh and the Republican party turds on the Supreme Court step in. That’s how authoritarian tyranny is done. Sleazy Roberts and the conservative extremists on the Supreme Court are vile.
Thanks.
But a pardon would prevent “Benedict” Flynn “pleading the 5th” in future investigations, right?
A good copy editor would be appreciated. The article includes a partial quotation that makes for an incomplete thought.
We know Trump will grant the pardon immediately after Felonious Flynn is sentenced.
I don’t know if Flynn was charged on the unregistered foreign agent matter, but I think the rumor concerning that business is that he was charged (by his client) with more or less performing an extraordinary rendition on a Turkish citizen living at that time in the US. I also recall in that same time period an incident involving protesters ( again Turkish) being beaten by Erdogan’s security detail while that fine gentleman was here meeting with the dotard. The whole damn thing stinks like all get-out.
New addition to court procedure on defendants making a Plea:
Judge: How do you plead?
Defendant: [Enters plea]
Judge: Do you make this plea voluntarily and without undue threat or influence?
Defendant: Yes, Your Honor.
Judge: No Takebacks! Your plea is hereby entered into the record.
Gleason should restore at least some faith among people that there are at least a few people in positions of power who are not cowed down by the bully who sits in the White House.
White privilege?
This has got to be the best TGOET line to date. Instant classic.
Excellent news. How long before a few angry tweets from “Needy Amin” about how unjust all this is? A well-deserved slap in the face for William "Dis"Barr. More like this, please.
The job of the Department of Justice includes subverting and destroying justice when needed. They did nothing wrong, even if they did something wrong, they did not do anything break the law, even if they broke the law, they did not commit a crime, and if they committed a crime, it is perfectly fine for them to commit crimes. Crimes are part of the job at the white nationalist Republican department of Justice.
This is going to make it a little harder for a 3-judge panel to decide DoJ can do whatever it wants. It probably also provides a roadmap for the next AG, if there is one.
(One thing to remember is that every record of this administration is protected by federal law and available to the next administration. Destruction of those records is an offense in itself and an invitation to additional investigation. Lots of other people could find themselves wanting to take back guilty please for lying to the FBI.)
Ya think?
“Such self-serving gamesmanship obstructs the administration of justice by vitiating the plea process and wasting courts’ and prosecutors’ time and resources,”
Are we allowed to hold his recent “council” accountable as well?
“the law does not permit a defendant to disavow his guilty plea as a lie merely because he now fears he misjudged his possible sentence.”
Was he lying then or is he lying now?
