Ex-Impeachment Manager Rips GOP For Playing ‘Whac-a-Mole’ On Jan. 6 Commission | Talking Points Memo

After two impeachments and the narrative being that the Democrats “failed”…

I don’t think this is the GQP’s argument. Their talking points seem to want to treat this the same way you would treat any act of violence, by a criminal investigation of the people directly involved, as if there is no larger context to it. This is a massive conspiracy, not some punches thrown in a barfight in the last row of the economy section on a flight from Sacramento to San Diego.

I’m wondering what would be left to uncover that we don’t already know? I mean, sure, let’s do everything possible to look under every rock for more info, but what happened on that day is plain to see for everyone who isn’t a Trump supporter.

I know there has been speculation about things like MTG or others giving the rioters an advance tour of the Capitol, possibly some phone calls from Trump’s inner circle to the Proud Boys? It would be good to uncover anything like that for the history books. But at this point, I think there is plenty of video Dems can use to weaponize Jan 6th against any R’s running in 2022 who are trying to downplay what happened and/or support the Big Lie.

Did the Dems do that with the result of the first impeachment in 2020? How’d that go?

In 1984, when Reagan was re-elected, it was dead obvious to anyone with eyes. Better late than never, I guess.

Way different than the insurrection. That was a phone call, not a conspiracy to overthrow the results of the election by lynching the VP.

I noticed Cassidy threw in some Nancy-bashing because these so-called moderates, when they say something that isn’t quite insane, have to then turn around and bash the Dems in some scurrilous way. It’s like a swear jar, I guess.

I know D’s in congress have to make a show of being eager for bipartisanship but I say bunk. We go it alone and we can rip them to shreds by telling the truth. That is what is going to happen after all the posturing.

The biggest problems are similar to what happened with the Meuller investigation. It can be gamed behind the scenes, politically inconvenient information can be permanently buried, if it spills into a new administration, it can be killed outright, and while it is going on, the Repubs can use their megaphones to control the terms of the conversation and public perceptions of what happened until any info dribbles out. None of that helps the Dems in any way.

I think there was an incredible amount of planning and coordination that occurred by Trump’s top lieutenants, including his family members. I also want to know about Ginny Thomas’s involvement in this. As much as we know, we don’t really know how far up the chain this went and how it was organized. My strong suspicion is it involved top members of the Republican Party and the Trump Administration. Whether we have the courage to seek the truth wherever it may lead is still an open question.

Okay, you had me up until this sentence, I can conceive of zero events or developments that would provoke the modern American media to such an outrage - Unthinkable!

The vast majority of Republicans still think T**** should be President. They think he IS President and that Biden is an interloper. The GQP will run on this ‘the election was stolen and will be again if you don’t show up’ in the midterms. The Dems rarely have that sense of urgency and I hope to G-d and Greyhound they do in 2024 because there will be no do-over if we don’t show up.

Voter suppression and intimidation will be rampant - we must prevail, despite the obstacles that will most certainly be put up.

Maybe. But you know Trump wouldn’t be able to help himself from stirring the pot against his fellow Republicans. And what Trump screeds, generally leads.

My favorite part of the Bible is when Republican Jesus gives money to the rich, tells the poor to suck it up, and asks for Caesar’s birth certificate.

It goes without saying that whatever form the investigation takes will be Muellerized. But we can’t discount Mueller’s report and prosecutions either. They haven’t disappeared, and the integrity with which they were written should make them outlive the present political climate.

None of that has much to do with an investigation into Jan. 6, I don’t think it’s about persuading GOP voters, either. IT’s about getting to the truth of what happened, regardless of the politics.

Americans other than the GOP voter base who are Trumpers want to know what happened. Most are appalled or they wouldn’t be turning in the people who did it right and left. Good grief - one them was turned in by his dentist’s office. I’ve yet to talk to anyone who was anything other than shocked and disgusted by Jan. 6.

I hope so. These people have taken denial to Denali heights. It’s incredible what they can refuse to believe.

The rioters are already being prosecuted by the DOJ. Anyone who broke the law on that day and can be found, is being corralled and punished. The DOJ can’t investigate all the murkier issues surrounding the event that don’t involve actually breaking the law.

So what’s left? Theoretically, the DOJ could bring an “incitement to riot” charge against Trump and a few others like Giuliani. It’s probably not a slam-dunk case though, with the chance that a jury might rule Trump was exercising his 1st Amendment rights. And the DOJ isn’t going to charge an ex-President unless it’s a slam-dunk case.

Absolutely.
