Ex-Gov. Rick Snyder Named Harvard Fellow

Former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R), who is currently being sued for his role in the Flint water scandal, has been named a Harvard fellow.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1232412

“Governor Snyder brings his significant expertise in management, public policy, and promoting civility to Harvard Kennedy School,” Jeffrey Liebman, the director of the Taubman Center, said in the announcement. “We are excited that he will be joining the Taubman Center and confident that he will bring tremendous value to us and our students.”

This is tone-deaf, mind-bogglingly offensive, stupid, and represents everything wrong with the incestuous government-academic relationship. We need more bartenders and fewer Harvard fellows in government.

Would Harvard care to explain/defend what happened in Flint directly under Snyder’s watch? I might add this also smacks of racism.

Sounds like the FBI should investigate this one too.

This is just getting ridiculous. Cruz, Bannon, Pompeo, and on and on.

Note that that little jerk teenager from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas high school had his acceptance to Harvard rescinded because of his asinine racial comments. It was nasty and inflammatory, yet he didn’t cause God knows how many children to have health and cognitive problems from lead poisoning. Snyder isn’t just getting into Harvard, they’re paying him handsomely to occupy a sinecure.

When I thought about getting a PhD, I would think about a Harvard PhD. Now I am glad I did not.

Harvard announced that Snyder, who left office in 2019, was slated to begin working as a senior research fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Taubman Center for State and Local Government on July 1. for State and Local Government on July 1.

Perhaps this is appropriate, considering that the Taubman Center was founded by the convicted fraudster A. Alfred Taubman.

It’s been clear for some time we have been scraping the bottom of the barrel to fill government positions - now it appears academia is going the same route. Handcuffs, not Harvard, for Snyder.

This makes me sad and angry. I’m a lifetime academic, committed to teaching as an important mission, and generally proud of my association with higher ed. But academia has changed over the course of my career. This isn’t about scraping the bottom of the barrel for Harvard - there are thousands of qualified individuals in many fields who would gladly accept their offer. it’s about cultivating political connections, favoring relationships that they think will generate money, and bringing notoriety to the institution. Even in terms of these goals, I think Harvard made a really poor judgement because the notoriety they will get isn’t the kind they want.

Unless the research Snyder will be contributing to is about how to effectively poison and kill minorities and the poor while escaping prison, there have to be thousands of other more qualified people that could be a Harvard “fellow”. The number of Republicans that fail up in society is mind boggling.

I’d be kinda concerned if you didn’t.
