Your intermittent briefing on negotiations over the reconciliation bill.
As Democrats reckon with Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) newly aggressive opposition to the reconciliation bill, even moderates are realizing that he put them in an impossible position.
Anybody having a brain, children, or elderly relatives needing expensive prescriptions; people living on crumbling roads; those who want clean water and/or clean air, etc., etc. etc. should all be mightily pissed at CoalCarrier Manchin.
So after the “King” of the Senate makes his grand proclamation on Fox News, he’ll have to crawl back. So goddamn self-absorbed he had no idea this would be received so poorly. Surprise, Joe.
What should be clear from all of this is Manchin is concerned about Manchin and little else.
That is I think Jo Manchin has been using this to shakedown certain interests on behalf of himself and his family and those interests have given him his taking price.
I appreciate TPM putting this stuff under “Sausage Making.” That’s not to say it isn’t important, but it is it’s own things.
Manchin may be most susceptible to the predictions of the economy being worse because BBB doesn’t pass…that gets laid right at his feet, and gives angry Democrats a target for 2022 (elect more Democratic Senators so Manchin is irrelevant).
He set himself up for all this, it was a really stupid political play on his part, and it looks like he did it because he didn’t feel the WH staff was nice enough to him. He should realize how “nice” the Republicans would be if they take the Senate back, much less the presidency, but it looks like he let his current position as the linchpin go to his head, and in the process destroyed his friendship with Biden and many others. Odds are he retires in 2024 now, he just burned all the bridges with his little performance.

I think Manchin did this because he sold his soul. The only question is for how much.
He’s going to “reconsider” and lie again that he didn’t mean “no” to the entire thing.

I am sure that Joe is willing to negotiate on the road to nowhere, if they are so willing to continue indulging him with that while keeping mum on the direction.
His little meltdown has made him a complete pariah with the Democrats and has won him no friends anywhere. If he’s allowed to cool off a bit, he might just realize all of that. Who knows.
