Texas Democratic Rep. Nicole Collier made headlines this week when she chose to sleep in the state capitol building rather than be bullied into accepting a police escort in order to leave. It’s one of many intimidation tactics pushed by Texas Republicans in recent weeks as they threaten their Democratic colleagues for daring to protest…
Can we have a real conversation about how we are watching the end of our Democracy happening right before our eyes?
It is time to stop talking about what might happen because it is happening.
What is next? On their side.
AND THE REST OF US, WHAT ARE WE DOING!!
I just moved from a deep Blue state WA to a Red state FL, where my wife and I will register to vote as Democrats for the midterms and local elections. After we get settled I’ll look for local Dem or Dem-adjacent groups to either volunteer or support financially.
We didn’t move here for political reasons, it’s because the grandkids are here. But hey, two more Dems in FL! Everyone else in a deep Blue state, c’mon down! It’s… er, hot and humid. And expensive. But we need you!
Dear Texas Republicans, you really are stupid aren’t you? You are going to tear your own party apart, by punishing California Republicans to appease Trump. You’re going to destroy your own reputation in the process.
Meanwhile, Gavin Newsome is well into his campaign for 2028, and he’s making you look like idiots.
You fools!
Edit:
“All these demonstrators you’ve seen out here in recent days, all these elderly white hippies, they’re not part of the city and never have been,” he said. “And by the way, most of the citizens who live in Washington, D.C., are Black.”
“But they are not really the majority,” Miller added “because each of them only counts as 3/5 of a white folk like the Founders intended.”
If the infotainment media doesn’t make a big enough deal out of all these atrocities, then each of us needs to. Contact our Congressfolk and Senators. Ditto for the folks in the state houses and locally.
Here in New Mexico, we’ve got municipal and other elections coming up in a few months – and we ought to be fighting for the Democratic side. Maybe your state is similar.
It’s more satisfying to work for parties and candidates than pulling one’s hair (if any) out. Probably more effective, too.
(I figured there would be some comment about the “elderly white hippies” crack. No takers yet.)
Why? What the Hell? Fuck THEM!
I hear you, but it’s too late. It isn’t safe for my family to move to a state that hates queer people so much.
I live in Eastern Washington and it is hard enough already. It is extremely difficult for my children, here. I can’t imagine moving somewhere worse.
So no, I won’t move to Florida. We won’t take the job offer in Oklahoma. We will continue to live in Washington and comute to Idaho. It isn’t safe, but it’s safer.
And as I get older, and weaker, I don’t want to move to a state that doesn’t value the safety net.
America isn’t a good place to raise your family anymore, but at least in some blue states, it’s still possible.
“I can’t be on the floor or in the bathroom?"
Texas Republicans have bought in to dictatorship.
A lot of the speculation is always about the results of the midterms. That’s making the assumption that they will actually take place as usual. If tRump thinks he’s going to lose the House he will find some way of either a substantial delay or a complete cancellation of them. If the Dems were to regain control his entire agenda would fall apart and there might be another impeachment. He’s not going to let that happen
Understood, but for what it’s worth, Florida isn’t a monoculture, it’s a huge state with different cultures. The North and Panhandle is basically South Alabama. Central and SW FL are Republican retirees. But that’s not the whole state. Miami where I live now is basically the capital of the Caribbean, very different. Here’s what WIki says about the local queer scene:
Miami has one of the largest and most prominent LGBTQ communities in the United States. Miami has had a gay nightlife scene as early as the 1930s. Miami has a current status as a gay mecca that attracts more than 1 million LGBT visitors a year. The Miami area as a whole has been gay-friendly for decades and is one of the few places where the LGBTQ community has its own chamber of commerce, the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC). .
There are other upsides to living here like the food, the overall culture, and most people are pretty friendly but it helps if you know some Spanish. Downsides are that it’s expensive to live here, the climate would be a shock to anyone used to living in the PNW, and we still have to put up with whatever the state government under DeSantis tries to push down our throats.
“So we’re going to ignore these stupid white hippies that all need to go home and take a nap because they’re all over 90 years old,”
How does he know they are over 90 and need a nap? Must be because he is under 9 and needs a nap just like the convicted felon. I wonder if his grandma heard him say that.
The federal government has no role or responsibility in a state’s election responsibilities. Maine must continue to tell them to pound sand.
My Uncle-in-law and his husband live in Florida.
I think my real point was to highlight what is happening in our schools. Kids are getting bullied for being “woke.” This is happening in schools that my kids go to now, fortunately we’ve found an alternative high school for the boys (I am so excited!), but encountering systemic hate is happening now.
The example my daughter brings up is that one of her teachers allowed a student to do a persuasive presentation on the threat of transgendered people in public bathrooms, which is bad, but it’s even worse, because one of the students in the class (my daughter’s good friend) was trans.
So if hate is happening now, in a school district that doesn’t tolerate it, ostensibly, and has no bans on books, how can I possibly expose my children to an environment that doesn’t have those rules, and has those bans?
I think he killed and ate his grandma.
This old white hippy things Steven Miller should go FUCK himself. That is if he can even get it up.
Pretty much the same reason my wife and I are in FL for the past 4 years. We are 2 reliably blue votes. And the heat and humidity are manageable with some lifestyle choices.
Oh, I’m more than happy to pipe in with the elderly white hippies comment.
The sad part is, many of those Miller openly distains will still vote for his policies and that’s where it gets real complicated.
