Evangelical Politics Editor Quits Over Publication’s Embrace Of Trump

Bill Maher did a monologue about the amazing resemblance between the God of the Old Testament and Donald Trump. It’s no accident that Evangelicals seem to get most of their guidance from the OT and have seated Jesus at the children’s table.

They’ve done what my dog does sometimes to guests and I have to intervene with profuse embarrassment and apologies. Or rather, what trump does to the flag on occasion.

Since we are talking about “beliefs”, let’s go over a few of the central beliefs of Trump:

(1) “There is always someone out there who will do what I want for the right amount of money.”
(2) “I have enough lawyers to drag out the appeals process enough to get what I want”
(3) “I’m too dirty to be blackmailed”
(4) "The religion I have appropriated for followers believes in, among other things, ‘forgiveness’ "

Going to agree with almost all of your perspective. Though it’s not that complicated or intertwined with different reliant tenets-- when it comes to the (Big E) Evangelical support for Trump.

Have had the discussion with a pair of evangelicals with whom I associated for many years. TBH, I’ve not spoken to them since maybe the year after he was elected. But it comes down to one thing-- overturning Roe v. Wade. Nothing else matters.

The E’s will forgive any sin-- if the emissary will create the circumstances to accomplish this goal. And I’ve asked every question. Presented every sin known of Trump-- at that time. These are accomplished people I had sorted into the ‘trustworthy column’ mentally. Yet, nothing else mattered-- except abolishing the right to make that choice. Their modern day Holy Grail.

It’s not complicated. It’s binary.

There are millions of Christians out there who know Fat Donnie is unfit for this office. He degrades it every day. The entire religion is open to mockery and dismissal if those who know better don’t act.

“Cuz I’m a fucking moron, apparently.”

Wouldn’t a President Pence nominate the same pro-corporate, anti-women judges? Of course. So for the the white evangelicals, this boils down to

  1. Pence cannot win the general election. They need Trump to activate the non-evangelical portion of the racist base.
  2. White-evangelicals are racists.
  3. Besides policy, they embrace Trump because he is an affront to everyone else that has made them feel inferior for the past twenty or thirty years since the so-called Moral Majority had any sway.
  4. Because they are by and large gullible cowards

“I fear death and the unknown so I will swallow and regurgitate this specific version of a bronze age tale that happens to be popular where I was born and raised.”

Merry Christmas – the federal holiday devoted to shopping and good cheer; that coincides with a religious holiday that coincides with a pagan festival.

Given a choice between Trump and their Christian faith and principles, the “Christianity” thing lost. Oh yeah - that’s been the case for a few decades now.

These people just bore me. If anyone really, truly believed, in their heart, what these types say they do then they would not do just about everything they do. I’ll never understand how a book came to be such a license to be a hypocrite.

Zealots by nature…religious, anti religious, scientific, anti scientific, political, apolitical, military, pacifists…will always become tiresome and in a lot of cases, dangerous. Self righteousness is powerful rationale for bad behavior.

Love of power and money…even Jesus was tempted.

I’ve heard people saying that Donald J. Trump is the Anti-Christ. That’s what they are saying. I don’t think they’re right about that, because I’m pretty sure the Anti-Christ would he a helluva lot smarter than Donald J. Trump.

I’ll feel sorry for you when we start having major news cycles devoted to what has or hasn’t been said in “Atheism Today” and “Nonbelievers Quarterly.”
