House Democrats took a step toward asserting Congress’ right to review the president’s receipt of emoluments on Tuesday, after Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) ordered staff on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to caution foreign officials that they may be “facilitating” President Donald Trump’s potential violation of the Constitution.
Congress has an obligation to act.
This probably won’t affect a lot of governments. But it will likely affect trump, who will in some way threaten anyone who considers switching to non-trump properties. Thereby furnishing additional evidence that influence-buying is what it’s about.
Waiting for Trump to reflexively mean tweet and complain that the Democrat House is trying to deprive him of his god-given and Article II Constitutionally protected right to make money off of foreign governments and individuals and as many American institutions and individuals that he can on the sole basis of being president. “They have no right to try to keep me from profiting off the presidency. Why the hell do they think I even ran?”
Hmmmmm…interesting. If they would tighten the language up, they could say that paying a Cheatolini-based company may be considered a bribe and therefore open to prosecution.

How angry Trump gets about them interfering with him doing business and getting their money will be the tell, and I’d be pointing to it in Court and in pleadings as prime evidence of just how influential such back-channel payments can be given their obvious importance to the raging orange asshat who is demanding that Congress not interfere with him getting that money.

And ousting McConnell from his seat in Kentucky as well. He is up for reelection and at the moment he is polling miserably… 24% approve and 48.5% disapprove of the job he has done. An approval of 24% ought to mean he should be looking for a book tour or perhaps a slot on Fox as a new talking head.
