Worth repeating. I was born in Miami, both my parents were born in Miami, all my extended family are and were were lifelong Democrats. Which is why the “Floriduh” memes are hard to take.
It’s outsiders, outlanders, those damned retirees from conservative states up North that shifted FL from a blue to a red-leaning state over the years. The North of FL and the Panhandle were always rednecks, basically South Alabama. But it’s the invasion of retirees into the middle of the state near Orlando and the Southwest coast that shifted the politics.
Maybe the hurricane risk will eventually drive them to Arizona (sorry, AZ!) where they can at least huddle inside the air conditioning and not worry about hurricanes.
In 1983 a hurricane came up the Gulf of California…that bit of sea between Baja California and Mexico’s west coast. I stalled over Sells, Arizona which is a small town west of Tucson. I had a rainfall measuring set up back then. I measured 8 inches in 10 hours. Now the north to south road just three houses to my east is really spillway to take considerable water and shunt it to the Rillito river. That spillway overflowed. My backyard filled, water got into the house thru a back door. It filled the house to a depth of
about 4 inches. It flowed out the front door. My house flooded. Lotta furniture damage, carpet damage and deeply distressing was the loss of books, notebooks and some pictures.
I say this to offer that we long termers in Arizona know what a hurricane means. I should add that I measured 8 inches in 10 hours. That was day one. The next day the storm had not moved. I measured a further 7 inches that day for a total of 15 inches in 2 days. That represents a year and a half
worth of rain in 2 days
Vance got checked 7 times across the whole range of debate topics and was found wanting. Walz was checked once and was found to have mixed up a date from 35 years ago, which he acknowledged.
This rundown doesn’t include those things Vance just wouldn’t answer, for instance, a question about whether Trump lost the election in 2020. That’s a pretty simple yes/no question. Walz’ answer to the non-answer:
“That is a damning non-answer,” Walz said. “I’m pretty shocked by this. He lost the election. This is not a debate, it’s not anything anywhere other than in Donald Trump’s world.”
