Americans got a taste of what can be accomplished with the passage of the Covid recovery bill, and they liked it very much. A bill that every single Republican in both houses voted against. I think that’s in the background of this filibuster reform discussion. That Republicans are wholly out of step with Americans, and should no longer be permitted to have an absolute block on legislation as a minority party.
I think they gravely miscalculated on that particular bill. If it wasn’t for reconciliation, that bill would have never passed!
Shocked I tell you that a picture of the dotard does not accompany this article. Still not used to the change in the weather I guess. Anyway I am so pleased to see Senator Durbin link immigration reform with the need for filibuster reform or elimination. As the GOPers and Chuck Todd try to get mileage out of blaming the continuing problem of thousands of desperate kids massing on the border on President Biden without offering legitimate solutions here is Senator Durbin daring them to discuss immigration reform on the Senate floor.
Agreed. The Republican Party wins by showing government doesn’t work, can’t work. We win by proving the opposite, and, as you say, we have a huge window of opportunity.
Even Democrats…hope and success are great vehicles for concerted imitation…
In point of fact, the only things the GOP can do right now are:
(1) Delay
(2) Obstruction
(3) Voter Suppression
(4) Misinformation
(5) Endeavoring to Demoralize Democrats
(6) Locking arms in lock-step to do (1) thru (5) and feature all on FOX and BothSiderNation
.
Here in Alaska it was a huge effort by Native Health Consortium to get people vaccinated and our chief Medical Officer Dr. Ann Zink did a tremendous job of educating the masses over the past year about the critical need to abide by covid protocols. But what’s the story with S. Dakota being second on state vaccinations? Did the majority of the GOPers in that state finally tire of watching so many friends, neighbors and family sicken and die of the virus because of their governors ignorance?
Speaking of the increase of migrants, immigrants, asylum seekers, and the such at the border, it’s like the news people, or some of the news people are too damn lazy to do the research on why this continues to happen this time of year.
Somewhere recently I heard or read that it really doesn’t matter which political party is in power, if coyotes’ can make money off of desperate people, then they’ll tell the desperate anything that will put that money in the coyotes’ pockets.
Back in the former guy’s maladministration, when they came up with the policy that would result in family separation did they make any effort what so ever to announce this in the countries in the Golden Triangle? No they did not. And even after a year of family separations desperate people still made desperate decisions.
Given the recap of the history of the use of the filibuster that Durbin provided, and given the potential for abuse of the filibuster (or lack thereof) if, God forbid, the House and Senate flipped back to the anti-Democracy Party, Democrats could take a first cut at reforming or eliminating the rule by disallowing its use when debating voting rights legislation.
Our right wing governor tried to horn in on her nightly updates last year at this time but when he felt he had done his duty he returned to tax cuts and corruption as his chief focus. He very quietly installed Ted Stevens corrupt son Ben as his Chief of Staff but when I would ask my fairly well informed friends if they knew that or had heard of any press about him it was zilch. He was buried inside yet another corrupt administration. Years ago he went from President of the Alaska senate to resignation, not running again and out of sight as a tug boater out in far western Alaska. His group at the time proudly called themselves “The Corrupt Bastards Club” and even had baseball caps printed. They got a jump on MAGA.
