I agree completely with your assessment of the character of most of these people. My caveat is that all it takes is 1% of them to be more disciplined, brighter and more determined, and we’re in a world of shit. Another Timothy McVeigh is not hard to conjure up out of the swamp of these folks.

My work mostly involved face-to-face interaction so I just took the year off, mostly, and invested in gear and skills. Learned to sharpen kitchen knives, just random stuff like that. Last winter I was pretty down but most of the time it wasn’t actually that bad. Hiked with friends, tried recipes from YouTube, not the worst year for me personally. We were lucky compared to so many. : (

My SIL – who’s been hunkered down since the pandemic began – finally mustered the courage to venture out into public. She was fully immunized (Pfizer) and fully masked and went to a single exercise class. Today, her doctor confirmed she has delta.
And Israel, the world’s most immunized country by a long shot – per Pfizer, the gold standard – is in the midst of the biggest spike since March:

Perhaps our obsession with valuing “individualism” is playing in our favor. If you ultimately believe in the freedom of the individual as the be-all, end-all, it’s hard to justify sacrificing your own individual life as part of that cause. There’s an inherent tension there.

Don’t forget to take into account of Trump’s trick, “oh will have a plan ready in 2 weeks”. Trump’s has 2 weeked so many subjects, but a some point there will be a some that finally figure out he’s full of shit. And then a few of the some will get mad, and they may hold Trump in disgust, but they’ll act out on their rage because they’ll decide that Trump is a fraidy cat.

Apropos of nothing, a bunch of fifth graders were snap chatting pictures of one another’s junk around intermediate school. I keep trying to impress upon my son: don’t even take the picture, because the moment you snap a cell phone photo it’s out of your control. Even if you fully. read and comprehended the EULA and became intimately familiar with the permissions of every app, you’re still just trusting some anonymous corpo to honor their word and pray they don’t get bought out by some other, less scrupulous corpo.
