I watched it live. And as I was driving to work (at a VA hospital) I drove by a mall with one of those ginormous American flags – it was being lowered to half-staff.

We watched it in class on a TV. I can’t remember exactly but I remember Tom Brokaw reporting it and watching it explode. I didn’t realize what had happened the first time I saw it because I remember thinking that rockets weren’t supposed to do that.
John Denver had requested to be on that particular flight and had even trained for it but was ultimately rejected.

Gee, I guess the Petroglyph National Monument outside Albuquerque will need to close down altogether. It’s based around rock art left by those now-deprecated original non-white, non-American residents of the area.

More harm will come if they all get sent to prison so I’d just keep hiding if I could. Throwing American citizens in jail for no reason is against the law anyway.

On the day of the Challenger tragedy I was getting up for work that morning getting dressed and listening to the radio. The news anchor was speaking about the impending launch of the Challenger with its crew including a teacher. The anchor mentioned even though the weather conditions at the Cape were below freezing, around 27 degrees and the launch was still on. In the back of my head I thought “Isn’t a bit cold down there for a launch?” “There is a reason why the space program was located in the sunbelt, its safer and just makes more sense to launch in a warm climate”.
Later that morning I’m at work and proceed to go out with a coworker to pick up a tool for a project and we hear about the tragedy on car radio and were obviously stunned. The first thing I thought of was the 1967 incident where the three astronauts perished on the launch pad but in the back of my mind was “hmmm too cold”,“should have delayed”.
