I think we have gotten Donald Trump wrong. Sure, we know that he is a small and petty man consumed by hate and grievances, but I suspect we misinterpreted the target. He certainly feels great resentment towards the elites in the cultural, economic and political spheres that he feels have dissed him. However, I think his real enemy is the very concept of ‘American exceptionalism’. The idea that a country could aspire to achieve higher ideals is anathema to his selfish, narrow, deal-based win at all costs focus. He wants to drag everything down to his level, and to show the world that the U.S. is just another dirty, grubby country trying to grab whatever it can.

A reminder, your local police department is likely populated with a great many fascists, racists, xenophobes and white supremacists. Sure, there are many of them throughout our society, but I’d assert they’re overly represented in police departments. People with violent, authoritarian tendencies flock to institutions that give vent to those traits. You can include our military in that also.
