The Justice Department on Friday sued Roger Stone over nearly $2 million in unpaid tax bills that date back more than a decade. The lawsuit is the latest legal battle for the longtime ally of former President Donald Trump who was convicted of obstructing Congress and pardoned by Trump late last year.
”The Justice Department asserts in the lawsuit that the Stones deposited vast sums of their assets to the ‘alter ego’ commercial entity, Drake Ventures, instead of personal accounts, in an effort to defraud the government.”
IANAL, but I thought defrauding the government was a crime.
Why is DOJ filing a “civil lawsuit”, instead of criminal charges?
This reminds me of Warren Buffett’s saying about when the tide goes out, only then do you see who’s been swimming naked.
Well, we’ve actually known the people who’ve been swimming naked, but because of Trump’s protection racket, it’s taken this long for their comeuppance to commence.
This is just the beginning for Stone, Patel, and others. I certainly hope the list includes Bill Barr.
That was my question too: even if these ‘commercial entities’ and trusts paid taxes they seem pretty clearly evasive. Perhaps winning a civil suit helps establish that somehow?
Serious question: Where the heck does Roger Stone get his money? Does he earn it doing something productive? I honestly have no idea what he does for a living.
Not only should Stone be forced to pay back the taxes he owes, plus interest, but he must also agree never to wear that stupid hat or flash his Nixonian V-for-Victory sign in public ever again.
“I will fight these politically motivated charges and I will prevail again.”
Sorry Roger, Trump won’t be able to help you “prevail again” by pardoning you, like he did the last time you were convicted of a felony. Your get out of jail free card will be living in the cell next to yours, if we’re lucky.
I think these things always start as a civil suit because the government is trying to collect a debt. No reason it can’t turn into criminal charges, depending on what the defendants do or what might emerge in discovery.
When you have two layers of tax-shelter laundering between yourself and the damn house you live in, that suggests an unwillingness to pay what you owe. At least to me it does. Call me a suspicious person.
