The Justice Department went after a familiar target on Friday, filing suit against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Maybe DFG will pay his fine, and legal costs.

Neiman told the paper. “Nonetheless, the Government insisted on filing this suit simply to embarrass Mr. Manafort.”

That’s hardly a challenge, now, is it?

It’s strange, but for the life of me I cannot discern which of the Trump minions and apologists is the most disgusting, corrupt, creepy, slimy, ugly, and deplorable. Manafort is in strong competition though…

How did the DOJ miss this when he was convicted of tax fraud and bank fraud; where did DOJ think he hid the money- back then??

Let’s take his shoes and overcoats, cash them in also.

Man A Fart will look just fine in an orange jumpsuit.

I’ll buy one for him.

It’s a billion-way tie for first place.

Roger Stone is definitely in the running.

ETA. Don’t forget Bannon.

Good thing they did, otherwise he’d be pardoned of it by now.

Well, he claimed to be cooperating. IIRC, when his duplicity was revealed he went to trial only on the reduced charges in the cooperation deal - not everything possible, which annoyed me at the time, but now seems fortuitous

My best guess – and I’m just spitballing here – is that maybe, just maybe DOJ doesn’t have clear insight into the beneficial ownership of every account in every offshore banking safehaven?

Color me unsurprised that Paulie Walnuts had cash parked overseas that we didn’t know about.

As dirty and “too clever by half” as Manafort has been throughout his career, it stands to reason that he has a few skeletons in his closet. It was probably a matter of time that one of them rattled out into plain sight. Since he has a few tailored orange suits in his closet already, he won’t need to buy a new wardrobe (or, more likely, have a donor provide a few more for a tax writeoff).

Perhaps he was short of cash post-pokeytime and unintentionally brought it to the feds’ attention when he tapped the funds.

Feds asked Cyprus about Russian Oligarch monies and guess what… Manafort came up in the same list

BOP sprung Manafort to home confinement on May 13, 2020, and the story says DOJ first penalized him that same month. That suggests to me that they had some other source of information on the accounts.

There a law passed, I believe, by Republicans saying you have to register all your overseas bank accounts and accounts you have signature control over (ie company accounts) or they are subject to forfeiture. The law says, even for just late filing. If you live overseas and have a crisis ( we had a flood) it’s a hell of a lot of stress — you can lose all your money for not getting the damned form in on time

The purpose is to catch tax cheats like Manafort. So, they should either repeal the law or enforce it.

I think a whole lot of us snarked at the time that Manafort had overseas money stashed, IIRC, it was pretty well surmised even if no one knew exactly where the money was parked, though speculation was greatly entertained.

“[H]e has tried for months to resolve this civil matter…” everything except just paying it.

Yup. Somehow these laws only get enforced on lower wealth peeps.

Too late. Manafort already did a spectacular job of embarrassing himself.
