WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is expected to file a lawsuit Tuesday alleging that Google has been abusing its online dominance in online search to stifle competition and harm consumers, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

Fuck Google. I use Duck Duck Go because you aren’t tracked.

Did I mention fuck Google?

Google must be split into five regional search engines that slowly reacquire one another over the following 20 years. It’s the only way.

Internet searches subject to government regulation…just like they do in China. What could possibly go wrong?

Uh-oh. So Google’s support for Trump so they wouldn’t have to face an Elizabeth Warren effort to break them up isn’t working that well?

Also, I second using DuckDuckGo. It’s slightly different from Google, but give it a trial for a couple of weeks and you’ll never see a reason to back to Google.

Without weighing on the merits, I’d guess that the political baggage freighted by this action make it unlikely to survive in its current form into the next administration. At the very least, they make its success more problematic.

I get the joke, but that’s not the way to break them up. The units should be at least:

  • Search
  • Maps
  • Gmail
  • Other

And the units should not be able to feed information to one another. So, Maps doesn’t get to know what you searched for. Gmail doesn’t get to tell Search that you mentioned a trip to Mexico to a friend.

I have to be aware that my knee-jerk reaction to anything that this DOJ does is to assume corruption and some way to support Trump. That said, I’m torn between knowing that Google is too powerful and just wanting nothing at all to do with this DOJ.

Trust nothing this DOJ does. Forcing Google to give equal position to conservative ideology etc. In search results despite them not being at all as popular is part of the GOP effort to pretend it is still relevant and equally popular. It’s not. They are losing the messaging war because people are actively not listening so they want to resort to forcing these platforms to prop up their messaging and narratives.

You forgot YouTube, but I’ll wait to see what the alleged anticompetitive behavior is here. Data collection is obviously a huge problem, but that’s not one that can really be cured via an antitrust lawsuit.

Yeah, I forgot YouTube, and it should be it’s own unit. Maybe Chrome and Android as well.

It’s not the data collection that I would go after, it’s the data sharing. Make Search have to put its data out there on the market, and Maps can buy it, but Garmin can also buy it.

Am I the only one that thinks “not a fan of google”. But they are hella better than Facebook, and since it is Trump filing suit, well I am on google’s side…

Lots of the claims being made seem weak to me, and miss the dangerous stuff.

Hmm, how did Facebook avoid this? Could it be Zuckerberg’s kowtowing to The Vulgar Talking Yam? Enquiring minds want to know…

You can call them Google Regional Operating Companies (GROC).
