What the Justice Department said inside the courtroom Thursday at Stone’s sentencing hearing was in stark contrast with the chaos that’s swirled around the case outside the courthouse — chaos that’s been egged on by both President Trump and Attorney General Bill Barr.
The revolt within the justice department must still be a thing. Barr bungled this badly. He has come under withering criticism from people who know him. He’s been kicked in his ample ass for turning DOJ into Donald Trump’s personal attorneys. Hell is too good for Barr. He needs to halt all investigations into the investigators, declare that DOJ is independent of the corrupt political interference of Trump, and/or resign.
I would not trust Barr to tell me that today is in the year 2020. He may have corrupted Rod Serling from the grave and sent us all into another time period.
We will not be out of danger from this man as long as he holds the post of A.G.
People have the wrong idea about Barr. He is wealthy beyond most people’s dreams. He goes home and does not think about any of these matters, one iota. None of it matters to him. He might say one thing one day, something else another day, none of it matters. He’s paid his dues and he’s been paid back in spades. He has no role models or people from history who’s ideals he might hearken to or look up to. Nope, he goes home at five to all that wealth, kicks back with a snifter of single malt scotch, or starts up the barbeque, puts on some nice music and that’s it for the day. He just doesn’t really care. Does that disqualify him?
OT: We knew this was happening due to Trump’s incendiary language at his rallies but this is scary stuff. We need to vote for Democrats because our lives literally depend on it.
Agreed. I wonder if Crabb (and others) pushed up on Shea from below. Anyone know if deputy chief is an appointee or a ‘risk from the ranks’ position?
Also Judge ABJ continues to impress. I can only hope everyone in federal court has so measured a judge and so thoughtful a consideration of the harshness or fairness of the federal sentencing guidelines, irrespective of the color of their skin or their station in life. (ugh)
She was extremely fair to Stone and is to be commended for it. She looked at the totality of his crimes and made her decision. He got what he deserved.
Very interesting. I don’t think any of this effected Judge Jackson’s judgement in the least. Stone got what he deserved and so did Manafort.
The big question now is what the Orangutan will do about it, and if he pardons Stone, will Barr take that as an opportunity to jump off the shit wagon. Crabb was delivering a message to Trump from Barr - not to Judge Jackson who be on the DC circuit (or the SCOTUS) long after Trump is a bad dream.
Interesting take on a Stone pardon. Wonder if Barr has already talked to Trump about this?
`
Jackson agreed to postpone execution of Stone’s sentence until she rules on his motion for a new trial. If he loses that, he’ll presumably try to appeal and seek a stay of his sentence. Seems possible that process will put his theoretical first day in prison beyond the election.
So unless Trump is moved by the heat of passion to do it sooner or the courts are not as obliging in letting Stone drag the process out as they might be, I don’t see the rationale for a pardon before Election Day.
