“watched the violence on TV, and refused to stop it for HOURS”
This seems, at least to me, to be as impeachable as the incitement. If he was “horrified by the violence” he would have done what any other president would have and taken immediate pants on fire action to remedy the situation. I don’t see how this blatant irresponsibility doesn’t get equal billing vis-a-vis impeachment.
By this point I don’t know why his lawyers just don’t say, “He did it. So what? It’s not like the Republicans are going to do anything about it.” Trumpers would love hearing this.
I used to think that too. However, the word has been around since circa 1933 and originally derived from a psychological usage. Over the decades, the denotation crept to its currently accepted form (acting in anticipation of future problems, needs, or changes). According to my favorite linguist, John McWhorter, that’s how language evolves. Language purists can end up like Canute.
Trump told the rally that they had to change what was going on inside The Capitol Building that day and he was going to walk down to the Capitol with them. He would “lead” them.
Just because Trump was too lazy to walk the four blocks and instead opted to take his limo back to the White House to watch what he had started on TV doesn’t negate what he had said at that rally and what happened next.
Thousands of Republicans followed his instructions at that rally. It was not a small band of Far Right agitators. They had no problem traversing the expanse in short order. I’m a senior citizen recovering from cancer treatments and can walk a half mile with ease.
Trump has always had a problem with crowd size. Now he’s got a problem with gauging distance and the power of his rhetoric? If he’s so dynamic and charismatic, why did only a “small band” of Far Right thugs storm the steps and break down the doors?
A small band of MAGA from all over the country who sent thousands of selfies to their friends and bragged about being on the premises after they walked over police barracks and the bodies of the cops they beat up? They had no problem walking those four blocks, marching up the steps and waving hundreds of Trump flags while they trampled their own trying to get inside.
We watched them span those four blocks in minutes. We saw how many there were. We saw what they did in real time. We are the eye witnesses. And those thousands of rioters documented themselves, too, trying to find Pence and Pelosi with a noose with their cells phones. What they didn’t document their GPS did.
It was a deliberate march ordered by their Commander-in-Chief, with Trump flags waving the entire route. There wasn’t a truck which had to pick up the stragglers of this half mile “marathon.” We didn’t hear exhausted gasps for air from the ordeal. We did heard gang chants to break down the doors and to hang Pence.
Enough with the feeble excuses from Donald’s lawyers. Trump lead this insurrection. No one else in the Republican Party could have moved that many people that fast down the Mall to do violence.
Just to conclude this prolonged thrashing of this particular deceased horse:
There are 5 pictures of trump on the front page of TPM at this moment and the only one of President Biden appears at the bottom of the page, his face obscured by a mask. There are more than 15 articles about trump.
I just had to check if Esquire magazine was still around. That title reminded of the magazine. They are. They have an article today about the trial and also have a nickname for Trump: El Caudillo del Mar-a-Lago
Yup. If I know I’m going to be starting a new project, in which I must plan the various phases (requirements gathering, development of the design documents, implementation, documentation & testing, migration to production) then there are some things I can do before I begin the actual project planning - create the needed shared file structure, order the needed resources to allow the group to share files, book meetings, etc. All this is done before any actual planning occurs, and so is labeled as “pre-planning”.
In other words, I like to be “proactive” in my “preplanning…”
Reinforcements for the besieged Capitol police took hours to arrive. Why? What was trump’s role in delaying the response to the insurrection?
If he found the actions of those attacking the Capitol to be troubling, it was within his power to end it. By not doing so in a timely manner, he aided and abetted the insurrection, and betrayed his oath of office.
Certainly there is no 2 mile limit on “Inciting a Riot” - Invite the crowd - schedule it weeks ahead of time - whip up a crowd into a frenzy - send them off to “change minds” via “trial by combat” … if the crowd you are inciting is standing there and can see the target that you are encouraging them to attack … linear feet is pretty immaterial especially when it is within the range of toy walkie talkies … yeah - you created the bonfire
The distance between White House and United States Capitol is 2 miles
HELL - even kids Walkie Talkies have more range than that!
Walkie Talkies - 3 Pack - Long Range 3 Mile $28.00 on AMAZON
Wow! That’s even weaker than I expected. I particularly love the idea that Trump can’t have incited anything from a 30-min walk’s distance away. Ever hear of streaming?
Yes, but proving he reacted that way would require subpoenas of the WH inner circle to testify they saw his reaction, and testify to whatever pleas were asked of him to stop the riot. Unless someone in the inner circle suddenly discovered a spine, the subpoenas would be dragged through a court battle on the basis of some nonsense like executive privilege. The Dem leadership doesn’t want that kind of drawn-out trial.
The evidence for the charge of incitement are videos and Tweets of Trump’s prior statements about election fraud, his appearance at the rally, and what ensued afterwards. A few hours of showing that is all that’s needed to make the case.
