Discussion for article #236604
So long as Jindal leaves alone the traditional Louisiana post-coitus meal of Tater-Tots® and gravy he’s alright with me.
a symbolic statement on the basis of imaginary fears
Jindal imagines Jesus nailed to the Sword of Gryffindor…
THAnk gOODness. NOW the heAlth DEpaRTmENts FOR PIZZa REsTAURANts can"T BE sUED for NOT ISSUing PerMITS foR GAY PIzza.
So it is essentially a presidential campaign press release.
The Party of Stupid reins.
Get your stinky religious zealotry, away from my secular government!
A whole lot of nothing huh, sort of like his chances in the Presidential race.
This man won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford. How come? Did he leave his brains behind at one of the colleges?
With an executive order issued Tuesday evening, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal made clear he intended to enforce his own version of a religious freedom proposal that hours earlier the state House had killed in committee. However, Jindal's intentions aside, legal experts tell TPM the executive order will have little practical effect.
Translation: A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Sounds like the executive order and Jindal have a lot in common.
Trouble is regardless the legality or enforceability of Jindal’s edict many merchants, clubs, service providers, etc will presume they now have carte blanche to institute homophobic policies. Enlightening them as to the error of their ways still means many LGBT citizens are abused in the interim.
Not that he realistically had any hope, but he can now kiss all hope of becoming the GOP candidate for president and then winning that race goodbye. We don’t need a bigot in the white house…we’re having enough problems with the ones that inhabit Congress and the state legislatures.
Interesting to note; when the President of the United States issues executive orders it’s “overreach” and “unconstitutional.” When little Piyush tries to protect religious bigotry, it’s OK. Wonder why that is? Oh, riiiiiight, IOKIYAAR,. That rule is never broken.
“…Whole Lot Of Nothing…”
Yes, to knowledgeable, educated people, but not to the yahoos whose prejudices he’s trying to flatter.
Textbook demagogue. Nothing else.
I don’t care if this Executive Order has any real-world effect or not. Until this bigot is out of office, and the Order repealed, LA gets no tourist dollars from me. And I love New Orleans.
Perhaps Piyush should have watched LA Law instead of the Brady Bunch. (Of course, if he had, he would have chosen the name Arnie instead of Bobby).
Well, the real problem is that they in fact do. Louisiana has no legal protections for LGBT people against discrimination. That’s why this executive order doesn’t actually change anything. The article points out that the executive order is a preemptive strike against possible legislation prohibiting discrimination against gays. But properly written legislation could easily invalidate the executive order so it is doubly useless. That’s the thing about executive orders: the executive can’t use them to override legislation.
Agreed. My point is these types of executive announcements cause many to feel emboldened to be more brazen in instituting policies for their business they may have heretofore been reining in. There’s always a few on the edge that want to discriminate, but having Jindal publicly endorse it is what it takes to push them over the line. Sure, they could all along (maybe they knew, maybe not, or didn’t research it to be sure), but hey, now the Guv says have at it!! So they have at it.
Also, it’s one thing to table or vote down legislation enabling discrimination against LGBT citizens. It’s death by neglect, killed in committee. To craft and vote for legislation overriding Jindal entails a Republican legislature proactively voting for LGBT rights in a much more visible fashion. Would enough GOP reps effectively come out and say “Gays deserve this bill repudiating the Governor!”? I bet not.
