Residents of Arizona can carry their “heater” anywhere they want pretty much. and they can do so w/o paying anyone and no training needed.

In a corrupt country where I once lived, rich and well connected guys were able to get named “auxiliary” police officers…and besides being able carrying a gun pretty much anywhere they they able to use their badges to get away with traffic and parking violations, plus a lot of restaurants and bars routinely gave discounts and freebies to cops.
But I am sure that none of those things happen in Tulsa.

I really don’t understand this at all. If you give someone a uniform, gun, and a badge, then for all practical purposes, they are real police. So then, shouldn’t they have to go through police academy and jump all the other hurdles required of actual officers? Otherwise, why not hand just anyone a gun with some “basic training”?
This idea of auxiliary police is such an abject insult to real police officers. I’m surprised they put up with it, lack of personnel notwithstanding. It seems to me, either you’re competent to have a gun and a badge, or you’re not. No middle ground. The stakes are far too high. BTW, wasn’t George Zimmerman also a “reserve officer” of some sort?

Police and citizens sort of have a parasite/host relationship going on. The parasite needs the host to survive, and in the early days at least, the parasite provided some incedental benefit to the host. Sort of like how a parasitoid wasp takes care of aphids.
But now the parasite is starting to slowly kill the host. And something really needs to be done, sooner rather than later.

Grown men still playing, cops and robbers. This is childhood fantasy with real guns and bullets and worse, real death.
A big part of that 320 hours of training needs to be on the consequences of overstepping their boundaries.

No. Because they don’t have the local funding.
This is as problem going back to the founding of the country and the 10th Amendment. Local cities, towns, and villages are, under the Constitution, allowed to create their own public safety institutions, schools, libraries, laws, etc., when they can’t possibly afford them because they are too small to raise sufficient funds. (Meaning they ask for state and federal money.)
The drawback is because they lack funds (and refuse to raise taxes, heaven forbid), police resort to targeting citizens so they can confiscate their property and money. Jurisdictions like Ferguson, MO target the poor in their towns because they are too small to afford the police, fire and medical services within their city’s budgets, And towns like this are a financial burden all across the country because, not only are they inefficient and poorly staffed/equipped, they come begging for money from the state or federal taxpayers.
A town in Oklahoma has 250 residents but they have their own police/sheriff’s dept.? Why?
Chester County, PA outside of Philly has a couple of million residents,and is a fairly wealthy county in the state. They have more than 35 police depts., more than 35 fire depts., several independent school districts, etc.They also have 35 police chiefs, and 35 fire chiefs, and 35 deputy police chiefs, and 35 deputy fire chiefs, and several 911 call/dispatch centers, multiple training programs, financial systems, etc., etc.
Meanwhile, 90-minutes to the south, Fairfax County Virginia is similar in size, demographics, and wealth. Fairfax County has ONE police department, ONE police chief, ONE fire department, ONE fire chief, ONE Sheriff and Sheriff’s Dept, ONE county-centric 911 call center that serves police, the Sheriff’s dept., the fire dept and emergency medical services. Oh, and one county-wide school system. And it all works!
You do the math. Compare the pay structure. Compare the pension plans when you have 70 additional police and fire chiefs. Compare the costs of multiple everything and you can see the raw numbers on the stupidity of having so many independent agencies because, “Freedumb!”
Thought it couldn’t get worse, first it’s big money buying off politicians and legislatures so they could get what they want whenever they want it. This time it’s some big money boy buying off some of the safety forces so he can go out and play cops and robbers and go bang-bang. And, the safety forces in question say ‘oops’ when something tragically goes wrong.
