alternate, but ludicrous interpretation. had they just left the MMA matinee on 57th St, maybe. a more contemporaneous interpretation of the no indictment for the officer responsible for Garner’s death seems more likely to this reader. Klan references are not cool, but this couple is not convincing in the belief that black lives matter.

Newsflash, Allison Kaden: The whole Plaza is one big pain in the ass, controlled mob scene where you can’t move, and when you can move you can only move in the direction the rent-a-cops or real cops want you to, and when you do that, you can barely see squat anyway. So all the more reason it’s not a big deal that the thrillseekers coming to see the tree are inconvenienced by people trying to draw attention to a very serious NYC-wide and nationwide problem

This reporter was about 50 yards away from the Rockefeller Center christmas tree lighting, which, as happens every year, was overrun with people trying to be festive. Thousands of people were clustered between 50th and 49th Streets, standing there for hours, waiting to see the tree lit. I know because I work in Rockefeller Center, and I recognize exactly where the reporter is standing. I think it’s far more reasonable to presume the silly people who acted stupidly on camera thought this news report was about the tree lighting, as it was within a stone’s throw of the tree itself, rather than a report about Garner. To call my interpretation ludicrous simply proves that you are without the necessary information to make a judgment call. Indeed, your analogy about an MMA matinee on 57th Street insists on clarity where there is none.

Unfortunately, this couple would have no reason to think this was a report about Eric Garner as it was taking place less than 50 feet from the Rockefeller Center tree lighting where thousands of people had congregated, as happens every year, to act festively and watch the big tree light up. I sincerely doubt these people were standing there listening to the reporter and were merely enticed by the lights, presuming, as would certainly be natural given the geographic proximity, that the reporter was covering the tree lighting.

They had their 5 seconds of fame and guess what, they are IDIOTS!

Their friends are probably just as stupid as they are and will be high-fiving them.

Having read this entire thread of comments-- the only context that makes sense is yours.
That they made the gestures that they did-- was seemingly the poorest of coincidences.

I’ll go out on a limb-- and posit that once their actions become known to them–
in the framework of those circumstances?
They’re going to be humbled in a huge way.

They’re bound to get the comeuppance all here seem to believe is forthcoming.

I’ white and I’m not shocked because this is how a lot of white folks feel and freely admit to when they think no black folks are around and they assume I feel the same way. And no I don’t bother to tell them they are pieces of shit because I know it won’t change their mind.

Clearly we’re the ones who are racist for even thinking they’d do such a horrible thing on purpose.

No disagreement. People have become numb to it all.

But to me, this is among the reasons our country is so messed up, and it should be called out as a teaching moment to benefit everyone.
