Discussion: Zinke Defends Saying ‘Konnichiwa’: It's ‘Appropriate’ Because I Have Japanese Friends

He’s only 56 and just 10 years removed from being an active duty Navy Seal. Pretty sure he can kill you 18 ways to Sunday with just his thumb.
Gigantic asshole, though.

My dad used to do stuff like that all the time, embarrassed the crap out of us…we were stationed in Japan after the war and he learned some Japanese…if he met a person with Japanese ancestry he’d try out his phrases…half the time they didn’t speak Japanese and had no idea what he was saying…if they did, they’d smile at him kindly and answer back, which he of course wouldn’t understand. He’d speak German to people if he found they had a German background, too…funny how the only languages he could kind of speak were WWII enemies…I wonder if he ever realized that.

Obviously you have no recollection of the context in which this was said. It was at a hearing on the preservation of Japanese-american cultural sites in the US. She was speaking at the time explicitly as a person of Japanese descent. His greeting to her was him trying to be clever and showing off. It certainly made him look like an asshole. It wasn’t racist.

I can make fun of Zinke because…well… some of my best friends are right-wing assholes.

Where the fuck did Trump find these people? Each one is dumber and more venal than the next.

I always greet anyone with a German surname, like “Zinke,” with a cheery “Sieg Heil.”

And to think he had just been offered that guest cameo on Roseanne…

Certainly not as far as I could tell.

Com’on do you really think Trump found these fools? He has people for that. It’s the old “I know a guy who knows a guy.” But anyone with Russian connections that’s all on Putin.

I think what you are missing is he is an ass. He didn’t do to it be polite. If he had greeted all the other members of the committee with their ethnic morning greeting then that could, in a pinch, be considered nice.

Why hasn’t this racist’s show been cancelled?

Well, I used to have friends who turned out to be assholes, so I suppose it is entirely appropriate to call you an asshole, Asshole.

Ha…good point…and I have bad knees, so I can’t just sweep the leg…

Yes, but he isn’t being all up in everyone’s face about it like she was by wearing her ancestry on her face, making him think things and then do things…

I remain baffled by this assertion that an arrogant asshole move cannot also be racist.

As you note, context is important. The discussion was about not just “Japanese-American cultural sites” but sites where innocent Americans were imprisioned because the government didn’t think they were really Americans- that their ancestry outweighed their citizenship.

In that context responding to a congresswoman’s pointed question about the proposed elimination of funding for these sites with a mangled Foreign language greeting based on the Congresswoman’s ancestry is arrogant, thoughtless, and racist.

I have a lot of friends of different ethnicities because I use a lot of racist expressions.

Zinke: “I’ve long since has friends that were Japanese families …”

Me: “Were?”

Zinke: “Well … they got better!”
