Discussion for article #230022
Universal child care and early education. High quality programs are essential for children in the first few years of life – and help women handle economic and career demands while still knowing their children are safe and learning.
A fair minimum wage. Two-thirds of minimum wage and sub-minimum wage tipped workers are women. On Tuesday, several states voted to raise their minimum wages. If more do so, the increases would immediately put money in the pockets of working moms, reducing the need for government services.
Fair pay. For every dollar a man makes, most women earn 84 cents or less.
Affordable higher education and effective job training. Higher education and advanced workforce training are important means by which women can get ahead and make a good living.
I’m sorry, which of those policies is suppose to represent a rethinking by the Democrats? While they could probably push harder on them, pretty much everything listed in this article is stuff the Democrats have already tried to push forward only to have their efforts stymied by the Republicans constant opposition to everything. So while there is room to call for the Democrats to push harder on these issues, it hardly makes since to call for them to rethink their policies in regards to women by calling on them to adopt policies they already support.
Maybe if people in the media actually reported on the work the Democrats are actually doing in these areas instead of pretending these are new positions the Democrats need to adopt, the female voters mentioned in this article would be better informed about which party is actually doing work on these issues.
Yep. Democratic politicians and activists are already sponsoring legislation in these areas. Republicans are the ones with a 100% anti-fair-pay voting record.
Of course, for a lot of democrats this is indeed still just a we-suck-less issue.
You know what young women need to do? Get off their asses and vote for fucksake. Young people are a bunch whining little twits. We want this. We want that. But when comes time to vote, where are they? It’s pathetic. Until young people turn out to vote, I don’t give a shit what they want. Take some fucking responsibility.
At what point will people realize that birth control and the right to choose are economic issues? Please try having a career – or even a job – without being able to control your fertility and let me know how that works out for you. They may be just the beginning of what people need to conduct a civilized working life, but they are definitely necessary. I’m tired of commentators referring to these vital issues in the dismissive way the authors of this piece do.
Great on policies but lousy on messaging. When will they ever learn?
While Democrats do have a hearty share in the blame for their inability to message, it does need to be recognized that they are handicapped by the media they need to use to get their message out treating their opponents simple lies as being equal to their nuanced truths. Without a media willing to point out that the simple answer is a lie, people will pick it over a more complex, but factual, solution.
