Discussion: Yes, Bernie Sanders Dominated The 30 And Younger Crowd In Iowa

Discussion for article #245445

This is tough. I really like Bernie as a person. I would enjoy smoking a joint with him.

I was surprised at reports that the DEM turnout was bigger than the GOP turnout. Interesting.

Edit: I see now that the GOP had a larger turn out.

Who would win the younger voters in the general when either Clinton or Sanders is the nominee against the Republicans?

I heard it was smaller. 220K R and 170K D.

Trump: Iowans are breeding socialists. No wonder I lost.

Of course, he’s promising them free stuff. And it’s weird writing that because it’s usually the right-wing that likes to throw that out.

We’re gonna get the vaunted “youth vote” stuff, but let’s face it: youth neither have the money nor the influence that media outlets like to pretend they do. They like hearing all the “the system sucks!” stuff but they don’t pay their own way, they don’t appreciate the value of a dollar, and they think pragmatism is a synonym for status quo. Bernie Sanders is not going to deliver them a free education (and neither is Hillary) but they focus more on what really are moral stances than anything else.

Most of Bernie’s support in Iowa came from people just starting grade school when Ralph Nader caused controversy in Florida.

“Caused controversy” is the politest term I’ve heard to describe the horror that followed. But you know, what’s old is new again, so…

I intentionally used “caused controversy” instead of “threw the election to George Bush” to avoid being dragged down a rabbit hole re-litigating that fiasco for the hundredth time.

I’d be astonished if this was true given Trump.

On the light side, there is this from Borowitz:

You might be right. I re-read this, and there is no dem tally.

“They (Youths) like hearing all the “the system sucks!” stuff but they don’t pay their own way, they don’t appreciate the value of a dollar, and they think pragmatism is a synonym for status quo.”

@Doremus_Jessup, I don’t like liking this because I feel like a gramps for doing so. BACK IN MY DAY, etc.

I’m neutral in the sense that I’m going to vote for the eventual democratic nominee regardless of who that may be, but I’ve seen this move before, 8 years ago in fact.

It’s all well and good bringing out the millennials for a general election, but the Democrats’ Achilles heel is that these young pups lack the motivation to come out during the mid-terms, and that really hurts us badly.

It’s OK. I can’t help but think 911 never would have happened if a competent prez had been inaugurated in '01.

IMHO, Bernie is getting the youth vote based on the Cheech and Ching crowd. Marijuana is a big thing in college now. Bigger than 50 years ago. Kids are groovin’ to The Bern Vibe and understand that they’d get free tuition and healthcare in addition to all the cannabis they can eat. Of course, they will SAY that they want Bernie. Of course, come November most of them will forget to vote. But, this makes great copy and a horse race for the Media. Besides, Josh has always hated the Clintons. So, everyone wins!!!

Either one would win the younger voters over any republican if I understand you question correctly

Well I would hope that our side and especially Benie could impress upon these young voters what the stakes really are and that they serve the republicans by not voting.

It may have happened but I doubt we would have gone to war in Iraq over it

Exactly correct. They do show up in Presidential elections but then they don’t show up for the midterms which shows how difficult it is for the people who will be most affected fail to see the importance of their votes except in Presidential elections when the mid terms are even more important
