The Secret Service has wide latitude in establishing perimeters and zones they feel are necessary for the safety of those they’re tasked with protecting. If the Cleveland Police Dept has a concern the carrying of guns in the immediate proximity of the convention site represents a danger I’m puzzled they don’t request of the Secret Service an expansion of the gun free zone. At least clashing protesters close to the arena would be dissuaded from arming themselves.

Worth a repost: This is nice, and one more reason to stay far, far…far away from Cleveland: A bunch of neo-Nazi shitheads has said they will show up uninvited in the streets of Cleveland during the Republican National Convention to “make sure that the Donald Trump supporters are defended." Why…they must not trust the police, huh?
The white nationalists of the “Traditional Workers Party” announced this week it would be in Cleveland in force to maintain order, and this came after a Saturday rally in Sacramento, California, where it and another group of White Supremacists, the Golden State Skinheads, got into a hellova’ knife fight with anarchists and other white power groups. The melee at the state Capitol building left at least seven people hospitalized with stab wounds.

How big a zone are you thinking? How would you expect to barricade, patrol and enforce it? My guess is that the police are hoping mostly to stay out of the direct line of fire.

The secret service (and whatever military is backing them up) has a really serious problem on its hands, because this means that they’re not allowed to do anything about large groups with visible weapons outside their perimeter. I worry that this will not end well, and that Trump will use any violence that occurs as a reason why he must be elected and allowed to deal with “radicals and terrorists”.
