Discussion: WSJ: In Attempt To Speed Up Deportation Hearings, DOJ Gives Judges Quotas

I thought Republicans hated quotas. Oh right, they only like quotas that help minorities. They love quotas that harm them.

Is there a bonus program, too? Perhaps credit for innovative measures like 50 or 100 cases decided all together? Having a bus stationed outside the hearing room door with its motor running and the GPS set for Tijuana?

And he is a son of a bitch.

“…while preserving immigration judge discretion…”

It does no such thing. The clear message to Immigration Judges is to deport people, pronto.

Coincidentally, John Oliver discussed this on his show last night:

If they adjudicate 800 cases they get a set of steak knives.

“This is a recipe for disaster,” A. Ashley Tabaddor, president of the National Association of Immigration Judges, told the Journal. “You are going to, at minimum, impact the perception of the integrity of the court.” Sorry, Ashley - the perception of the courts already seem to have integrity at a fairly low number … and you might want to watch John Oliver’s take on your courts as well.
And the “whitening” of America continues onward … SMH

700 per year is ~3 per day (assuming 2 weeks of vacation).

That’s each hearing, open and closed, in 2 hours.

Let’s do this with surgeons, too!

So that’s roughly three cases a day, or (including breaks and downtime and delays while people get their stuff together) roughly two hours per case to decide someone’s life.

I wonder how many judges will respond by ruling against the government in every case where ducks are not entirely in order, and how long they will last if they do.

That’s not each hearing, that’s all the hearings (if, say, there are motions that have to be considered) any given person is entitled to, to be completed within three hours. Plus an appeal-proof opinion.

I would think Chief Justice Roberts might be giving Jeb Sessions a call. Quotas for judges? That’s not the way the federal courts system works. The judges tell the attorneys what they can do. The police, ICE or otherwise, are only witnesses. Where do Republicans get such warped ideas about how the balance of powers works?

Quotas – for judges? There has got to be a Constitutional issue there somewhere.

Nothing says “due process” like quotas.
