Did you see that recently some forensic physics types claimed to have determined that Chernobyl did in fact go BOOM! rather than just Whoosh! ? (Short version: the conventional wisdom was that pulling out the moderating rods led to a runaway reaction that released enough heat to cause a chemical explosion; new analysis of evidence including details of damage and isotopes released at the beginning of the event suggest that at least part of the reactor released enough fission heat and radiation to vaporize itself and propel bits into the stratosphere.)

That was speculation soon after the event. “Woosh” as you described it wouldn’t account for the building’s roof and other parts ending up in bits a fair distance away. I think (and thought at the time) it went “BOOM” in a large way the Russians don’t like to talk about. Fallout from it ended up in Norway and Sweden and Chernobyl is in the Ukraine. That’s no small distance.

Michael Flynn is one of the most valued agents the Russians have ever developed within the US. I doubt there is another person of such a military rank that has ever been co-opted by the Russians. (Of course, the highest ranking Russian agent in the US is Donald Trump, but that’s for a different post).
