Discussion: Working Families Party Backs Cynthia Nixon In NY Governor's Race

So there will be a primary election. Thatā€™s perfectly fine. Itā€™s AFTER the primary that concerns me.

Didnā€™t we just have an actor achieve a prominent role in our government to deleterious effectā€¦Iā€™m sure she has some great policy ideas butā€¦TV actress to governor of a great state? What qualifies her for that?

No comment from the campaign, only from the establishment. Thanks, AP.

Sheā€™ll do great among the 4 train and 7 train voters.

Barf. What a narcissist. Maybe Cynthia Nixon can be New Yorkā€™s own Ralph Nader this fall. Wouldnā€™t that be lovely.

thatā€™s great. but where the hell were they [wfp] for zephyr teachout a couple years ago ā€“ who would have made mincemeat of little cuomo, toe-to-toe in public debateā€¦?

who, by the way, got corrupt nys politics in his motherā€™s milk.

This is a worrying development. Generally, I respect the Working Families Party, but here they are creating a divided ticket in November against a governor who has been essential on delivering on key issues such as banning fracking and gay marriage. If Nixon is on the ticket in November, we may be paving the way for a Republican governor and all that that entails. Iā€™m quite concerned and quite angry at this development. I wish that Cynthia Nixon actually worked the ground game to support candidates trying to run for assembly and NY Senate offices. Her bid seems something of a personal publicity scheme ā€“ sheā€™s not qualified, and sheā€™s doing nothing but dividing democrats when we need to hang together. And we could very much use her voice to create a progressive NY in other ways. What a silly, wasteful move on her part. Iā€™m sad that the Working Families Party is going along with this. As stated: We need people like Cynthia Nixon to help with the ground game for the many elections happening in NY; we donā€™t need an unqualified candidate opening the door for the disaster of a Republican Governor. Letā€™s remember this: If Cuomo loses, we get fracking in NY.

The other cost of this ill-conceived campaign: If Cuomo had an easy run, he could use his resources to help fund the many candidates running for assembly and senate seats. They have a very real chance of winning in November if they are properly supported and resourced by the party. Now Cuomo will have to resource his own election. This means we are less likely to win the senate and assembly in NY. We were one vote away from universal healthcare in NY. That one vote is what we need to win. If we lose the NY senate and assembly, part of the blame should rightly fall on Nixon and the Working Families Party.

They are subverting the work of hundreds of people trying to elect good candidates.

Winning elections is largely about creating a ground game ā€“ this takes perseverance and work. Her running is hurting the many many people doing that ground-work in New York to create a better state.

It seems like a real gadfly move for WFP, assuring their irrelevance after achieving good things over the years.

Iā€™m a big lefty, but such ā€œLimousine Liberalā€ posturing embarrasses even me.

You need a little more sophistication in your thinking. Gay marriage and the fracking issue are low hanging fruit for Dems,itā€™s easy as pie to be on the right side of those issues if your Cuomo. Itā€™s like being in favor of corn if you live in Idaho.

The real battle is behind closed doors, where Cuomo surrounds himself with the usual Wall St cast of characters. He was forced to support a minimum wage hike in order to get the support of Working Families in the first place.

Hereā€™s some other people who love Cuomo too:
Citigroup
Bank of America
J.P. Morgan Chase
Stanley Druckenmiller
Daniel Loeb
Blair Effron
James Simons
Carl Icahn
Ron Perelman
Ken Langone.

I donā€™t believe they support him for his stance on gay marriage.

The way to subvert these folks is to support great, progressive candidates in the senate and assembly. Sure, this gains less publicity, but it is much more effective.

A progressive senate and assembly would pave the way for a more progressive NY. But getting that will take actual work ā€“ volunteering, planning, knocking on doors etc. etc. etc.

A run by Cynthia Nixon for Governor is just a way for people to feel good about doing nothing.

She was a close friendā€™s classmate at Columbia, maybe between Broadway gigs. You have to be pretty exceptional to stand out for your smarts in a place like that and apparently she did just that.

ā€¦not enough time for that. Weā€™re way past the incrementalist bullshit. 10 steps backward, 3 steps forward donā€™t cut it anymore.

One more thought: Fracking was not low-hanging fruit in NY. It took hundreds of hours of work for each person involved in that fight. I worked that that ground-game and can tell you we were an inch away from full-on fracking. There were powerful interests involved. Iā€™m sure that those involved in the gay marriage fight will tell you the same.

And those involved in trying to elect real, qualified, progressive democrats to the senate and assembly as democrats ā€“ people working hard in their communities, day in and day out, putting in sweat and man-hours, will tell you that nothing in largely-Republican upstate NY is ā€œlow hanging.ā€ We work hard. We need Cynthia Nixon working with us, not against us.

When the economy goes bust and youā€™re standing in line at the soup kitchen, you always have those memories to keep you going.

Because that line worked so well for Bernie?

It did work for Bernie, yes.

You have a point. I mis-spoke: It did increase his profile and he doesnā€™t give a damn what his run did to the country.

Right, because we should elect the same people who signed off on the Iraq War, trickle down economics and bank deregulation because they have a ā€˜Dā€™ next to their name.

BTW, you canā€™t win an election without us, so good luckā€¦

Right, because thatā€™s all you can do, privileged white person, is sabotage. It worked great in 2000, too.
