How nice that Plains All American Pipeline is going along with paying for the clean-up. But what happened to all that Republican worship of “personal responsibility”? I want to see the CEO and President, the whole stable of VPs, and the entire Board of the company down there on their hands and knees. And then a rotation list of stockholders in shifts, as well. I want the people who are actually responsible for these horrors begin to do the hard work of cleaning them up, and maybe while wearing shaming work crew vests as well. These people go through life screwing up things for everyone else, and then just whip out the credit card to pay someone else to fix it. Maybe if they actually felt the impact in their own lives, they could become almost human.
The fossil fuel industry invests nothing, zip, zero in cleanup technology, or equipment. As a result they are always caught off guard when a spill happens. I remember seeing once on The Rachel Maddow Show how they where literally using paper towels. The exact same kind you buy a the supermarket to try and clean up a major spill. It was all they had.
What you don’t see is PAA CEO Greg Armstrong down on his hands and knees, even with time to cruise around in the corporate jet, play golf and eat fancy meals. Apparently, when you make even a small salary like $5 million a year at your $22 billion company, it’s enough to assuage a small conscience.
But let’s let Greg share his own words:
“We prefer to let the performance be the best bulletin board of success. Over the year, it’s sort of been my preference and that of the management team to take a low profile,” Armstrong said. “We have a saying that the only time a whale gets harpooned is when it comes up to blow.”
Make of that what you will.
