I do not think in the long run this will hurt Trump. Progressives think some sort of universal outrage puts Trump on the wrong side of this issue. But he’s done a somewhat effective job of normalizing the idea everyone south of the border is suspect, if not outright criminal and evil. I’m sure there were millions of Germans in the 1920s and early 1930s that did not picture themselves comfortable or accepting of Jews being walled off in ghettos, their businesses shuttered, stripped of their possessions and dignity. And then eventually killed. But then Hitler and Goebbels normalized such fear and hatred and it went mainstream. This is what Trump is doing, and he is wearing people down with the messaging. He has abettors in the media to amplify the message. Yes, the half of the country that dislikes and distrusts Trump won’t fall prey to that indoctrination. But the other half is so invested in him, so cult-like and slavish in their devotion, they have to bend to his message to keep their worldview from becoming confusing and falling apart. Therefore this will be no more damaging than anything else Trump does. It all enrages half the country, while half the country signs off on it and gets with the program.

The question is, which half (or in our country, which sliver) will get out and vote – those who think this is awesome or those who know this is evil?

It’s not half of the country. It’s not even half of the voters. It’s some percentage of republicans. The rest of us are horrified and angry. We’ll vote all right.

Would love to see someone beat the living shit out of this drone but that would be a further indication we are living in Trumps perverted version of America…we can anticipate a further deterioration of our social dynamic until this group is flushed out of office.

“Womp womp” should be the start of every democratic ad attacking Trump’s lack of interest in all manner of things, including child separation, Puerto Rico, affordable health care, affordable housing, decent public education, environmental protection, freedom of speech, tax fairness, nuclear security, diplomacy, and everything else.

Steve Schmidt a well known republican who worked for all sorts of GOPers has quit the GOP. I am no fan of twitter and I do not have an account there or at Facebook but I tell ya Steve’s most recent series of tweets are very interesting. He excoriates the whole party and trump in particular.

My sister-in-law, who in most ways is a wonderful woman, is a huge Trumptard. She was supposed to come over for a BBQ this weekend but I told my wife I will not have her in our house. I am done blaming the politicians. These actions are 100% on the GOP voters.

“this group” has poisoned the minds and attitudes of millions of citizens. You think because Trump leaves office those people will change? He’s lit a match and the fire will continue to burn. This isn’t the Wizard of Oz, where the Wicked Witch melts and suddenly everyone is free of her influence and a happy wave of euphoria flows over the kingdom. Trump has made people feel free to go public with their racism, bigotry and xenohobia. The genie is not getting put back in the bottle.

I would say that this is becoming Trump’s Katrina but, in reality, the aftermath of Katrina was never this intentional or malicious. Trump and his followers are actually enjoying the harm they’re inflicting with these policies. They can’t help but gloat while the rest of the world becomes increasingly appalled.
