Discussion for article #224207
As much as the liberal press sees breakthroughs in stories like this, given what it takes to be a long-time part of a cult built on the type of just-so stories that make up the Mormon Church canon and associated tales, it’s hard to take these struggles, even if they involve opposition to treating women as second class citizens, as more than a falling out of people pretty far out on the spectrum. While it’d be nice to think that the result of being excommunicated, assuming that happens, will ultimately lead to a fundamental change in the way she sees the world, as well as addressing the psychological issues involved, that will take some awfully big steps.
Funny, many ex-Mormons who have publicly stated that they loath the LDS church have an incredibly hard time getting it to take their names off its rolls. I guess this is the easy way to do it!
Lady, if you need an invisible sky fairy that bad, there are scores of denominations that don’t treat you like a second-class citizen.
’ … of course, there is room to ask questions,"
Ah, no there is not! I spent a year going through their indoctrination, and when I asked questions they didn’t want to answer, they told me I was just like all the other Protestants and that was the end of the relationship. And a satisfactory end on both sides.
ANY ’ religion ’ - where someone tells you what you can and cannot do . Nothing to do with God .
Typical. It’s a problem once her particular ox is the one getting gored.
Besides, if you believe in your cult’s horseshit, you need to STFU and go back to being a second class citizen. That’s what you signed up for - but you want to change it now?
Or is it another hypocrite who is selectively reading her the Word of God?
Faith and beliefs are personal constructs of self. You don’t need corporate religion to support them. Mourning excommunication is like mourning the loss of breast cancer.
Stand on your own two feet. Break the chains of submission and corporatism.
Sorry, dude. Cultists don’t work that way.
The cult is the focus of their identity.
Time for a schism. She can try to start the feminist church of latter day saints, although frankly sexism seems to be such a central part of Mormon teaching that I don’t see how it can be reconciled with equality for women. They just barely got rid of polygamy for political reasons a century ago, and they still left room for it’s return in the afterlife.
The moment you’re willing to take a red pen to the Word Of God you’re admitting that it’s just a bunch of stuff some person decided to stick into a book to tell other people what to do.
Racism was also once part of Mormon doctrine; the book of Mormon refered to dark skin as the mark of Cain and punishment for murdering his brother. Eventually mormons thought that was holding them back in the modern world, so they changed their scripture. So maybe one day Mormons will recognise gender equality.
Man, Word of God doesn’t hold that much weight I guess.
It can be used to justify anything, but can be ignored when it’s inconvenient. So, basically, the Prime Directive.
All religions tell you what you can and cannot do.And none has anything to do with ‘god’.
