Paolo Freire had a lot to say about this. Basically, it’s not enough to remove the oppressors, if the only paradigm for power that the previously oppressed know is oppression. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. The solution is to teach people a new way of seeing their world organized.
Seems that we’ve seen inflationary pressure even here - thirty-four years ago two minutes sufficed…
The person who called in her presence knew exactly who she was and why she was there; it was a long-running harassment. So not the same issue, even if the caller pretended to be concerned that a black “stranger” was in the dorm. The offense she reported, if I recall, was falling asleep in the common area.
Yesterday when I got back to where the old man had parked his car waiting for me he was engaged in conversation with a black woman. But did he get alarmed when she approached him? No. Did I get alarmed when I walked up to her? No, we all three continued the conversation, and I’m glad we did. It was three neighbors schmoozing. Bizarre thing, this living while black
Ask Kanye West about this. It’s their fault. Also recommend you read the book which is linked to in the article, The Warmth Of Other Suns about the black migration that six million black people made.
Before Facebook, at most this would have been, at most, a small article on page 12 of the local paper. So you might see something like this every few years, when it happened to someone prominent. Now, each one becomes national news, even when regular people are involved (like the guys at Starbucks).
But yeah, it’s still bizarre to see. I don’t get this paranoid fear and urge to call the police at a moment’s notice.
Yes she did, and I agree kudos to her. But the cop handled it well too. We need to give credit there too, and wish for more and more and more like him.
Remember a few years ago when a car company was marketing a car with a ‘heartbeat detector’ to let you know it someone was lurking in your car as you approached it? Straight up marketing of fear to white people and women in particular.
Yeah, I don’t think so. Not by a long shot.
But the relative frequency with which they are being covered is, for our society, good, good, good - as long as the story remains, in essence, that black people have the same right to be in public spaces that white people do. If it turns to “White person has reasonable suspicion and reports what they see; minority is unreasonably incensed” that’s bad, bad, bad. So keep an eye on the spin and it’s probably worth it to send a note or call news orgs that do a good job.
It’s hard enough for me to maintain equilibrium reading TPM. My aunt’s house used to have fox news on in the kitchen from morning till night.

That’s the nicest FU to a “concerned bigot” I ever saw.
I love that! hahahahaha
Very true. Great cop, need more cool heads like his.
I’m with you. But politicians always need to earn respect from the public no matter how respectable they are.
And I don’t know that I would be so gracious as she was.

Well, that was succinct.
A Trump steak. Many people are saying it’s in the mail. Many people. We’ll see. Bigliest!
And I wish people would recall, this was at YALE! It wasn’t a Bubba nor a Bubbette. Po’ folk can’t afford to go to Yale. It was one of the uppercrusters who thinks being born on home plate gives them an unlimited number of runs scored.
I’m a white woman and I’m getting sick and tired of how bad these other white women bozos are making me look. They really need to turn off their TVs (pre-set to FoxNews, obviously), get out of their houses, develop some hobbies and meet some people, preferably some of whom are not white. Sweet Jesus on a cracker these women are stupid.
