Discussion: Woman Calls Cops On Black State Rep. Canvassing In Neighborhood

You get to be Trump’s new Chief of Staff. Good luck.

Hey, it’s that “suspicious female” I keep hearing about on Nextdoor.

Bynum handled it well. She turned what was potentially ugly into something positive. Good for her. Notice there is no mention of the woman’s name in the story. I bet Bynum deliberately kept the woman’s name out of the story. Smiling selfie with the officer. Smart, all very smart.

There are, thank goodness, more exceptions than you might think. I fit the profile of an adamant Trump voter. I’m an old, white, suburban female. Not only am I actively part of the Resistance but so are my closest peers. I have removed any Trumpists from my orbit and I have told them why. I have always been able to debate issues with people who hold different views but these are different times and I choose not to waste my breath on people who simply repeat lies in defense of the idiot in the White House. Interestingly, to me, I have made new friendships and alliances with people both of my race and other races, of my gender and not of my gender, of my generation and other generations who feel as I do. We are here. We stand for American values. Perhaps we go unnoticed because when you see us you assume that we are Them.

The rep is genuinely lucky to be free from arrest or tasing or even death at the hands of law enforcement. It’s not drama, it’s not hyperbole; cops kill black people just for being black. Cops operate almost entirely without consequence because, in America, cops are ridiculously elevated to the status of rulers rather than viewed as public servants. A black person in this country has every reason to fear death by cop. Jeff Sessions loves it that way.

Some of what we’re seeing may be malicious - but I wouldn’t completely rule out fear.

I think part of the reactions we’re seeing is a programmed fear response. I’ve known women that seem to focus on fear - they read a story about a woman being robbed by someone hiding under a car, so the won’t go near any cars without first looking underneath. They hear about a car highjacking at a gas station, so they’re paranoid about anyone approaching them at a gas station, etc.

I’ve seen this more often from women raised to believe in traditional gender roles - women that don’t seem comfortable in their own ability to protect themselves.

That paranoia is probably feeding on and being magnified by the overt racism churned out by Trump and his minions.

Ms Bynum is far more charitable than I’d be. Going high while paranoid neighbor goes low.

Difficult to fully break out the ugly elements from the impact of all of the
“If you see something - say something” public service messages…
And then some of these situations start off simply … but things go bad when they get handled stupidly & / or inappropriately / or racist way.

Well, Sinclair stations now have an almost daily short feature on the local news called Terror Alert. Anything that happens, anywhere in the world gets five minutes of fear-mongering. It’s usually an interruption of the train of crime and accident stories which make up the news segment. You can expect a similar mix on the network news–any network.
Harry Shearer wrote about a friend in DC who confessed to being afraid to leave the house at times. He suggested she spend the hour she used to watch the evening news walking around her neighborhood. She stopped being frightened.
I read three newspapers a day, but I’ve stopped watching the news at night.

Yes, because when people are casing a neighborhood to rob, they go door-to-door asking people questions and typing on their cell phone. Makes sense. There’s probably an app for this.

Dear doctorblobrain,

People actually do canvass my neighborhood, going door-to-door because they do intend to rob us.

There are going to be white women voters turning out for Dems who are not scared racists. Maybe they’ll vote for one of the many new female faces in politics who are running for the first time.

Smart, good cop too, and I’ll there’s many more interactions like theirs that never hit the news.

Maybe reported incidents and their outcome are what is driving otherwise okay people to act irrationally. The caller in question should reach out to Ms Bynum who handled this perfectly and apologize.

Good on Officer Campbell as well. It’s refreshing to read an article where law enforcement responds to a call and handling the call with professionalism and class.

Beat me to it.

It reminds me of the day care sex abuse scandals in the 80’s and early 90’s.

You beat me to it! Definitely Nextdoor stuff. I’d love to see the Nextdoor Clackamas page about this. It could be a riot. Literally.

Why is this problematic? I’d call police in a nanosecond if I saw the creepy Dr. Ben Carson traipsing through my neighborhood.

Who wouldn’t?

She’s a politician and wants to be on people’s good side. The lady that called in is a constituent. Showing grace under pressure is a good way of earning respect.
