Discussion: With Obama's $400K Speech, Chaffetz To Revive Bill Curbing Presidents' Pensions

Because black guy. I’m pretty sure Trevor Noah handled this issue perfectly…

Making policy by sending a tweet at 5:24 in the afternoon is now officially a thing in the manner of the orange thing.

I read once that the highest paid government employees are college football and basketball coaches – some of them make seven figures.

President Obama presided over raising taxes on the rich, and the ACA is largely funded by taxes on the rich.

I imagine he will pay hefty taxes from his speech, and, as others have noted, he is very generous to charities.

So he would probably be OK with your suggestion.

Yeah, although I almost have to put that into the necessary evil category. The money some state university systems generate with their biggest sports programs is immense and you have to have a top notch coach for that. The real question is whether they’re truly justifying it by spending the money generated appropriately on the students and education resources.

I don’t begrudge the good coaches making good money, but it’s ironic in that it puts the lie to the belief of some that the highest-paid government workers are obscure pencil-pushers or liberal administrators.

It’s like the conservatives who hate on unionized government workers in general but who unquestionably support the police and the police unions, even though police are often textbook examples of unaccountabiity and bloated budgets, and that police unions are usually the first to push back against criticism of police brutality.

I guess the doctors missed the titanium racist prick screw when they operated.

One of the most punchable faces in Congress.

Ronald Reagan went on a speaking tour in Japan after leaving office and raked in over 2 million dollars on that trip alone. George W. Bush has given close to 100 speeches since his time as POTUS and been paid over 15 million dollars. Senators and Reps join lobby firms after they leave office and are highly paid. Why all of a sudden does Chaffetz go after the first and only Black POTUS I ask? I agree with a previous post which suggests eliminating lifetime pensions for all politicians; after all it is taxpayer money.

Such a comedian.

(Afaik the studies that have been done suggest that the big athletic programs pay for themselves and for some other athletic programs, but not for a lot else once you consider the capital costs of the required facilities, which non-pro students generally don’t get to use.)

If this mofo was anymore transparent he would be a roll of clear plastic wrap.

As attractive as that sounds out of the box, it continues a bad idea. I believe that if you work, you should have pensions, health care, and other things.
I will go as far as saying again what I’ve always believed as far as Conngresscrittes (Senate and House.)
Put all of them on a simple per-diem. Pay them only when they work. Give them perks and benefits only when they are in full session. Many State Legislatures do this sort of thing.
If they can’t live on that, let them get a real job.
As far as pensions and other aspects, they ought to get no more or no less than any average citizen gets.Up to and including pay raises while in office. They gave themselves a $2800 a year pay raise last year, and gave people living on Social Security $6.00. I’ll give you 3 guesses who it is I think should have been given the $6 shafting.

Don’t know why but the old line “he wouldn’t make a pimple on a good man’s ass” comes to mind … just outta’ the blue.

What nonsense!

Presidential pensions began because harry Truman left the presidency with no income and little prospect of one. He returned to Independence MO to the house he’d owned before, and was unsure if he would be able to keep it.

I imagine so, but I didn’t make clear that I was really thinking of the Wall St people, who would have caused the second Great Depression if left to their own devices, yet somehow still have that kind of cash lying around to drop on a speech.

On a speech!

$400K is the price of a beautiful home with lake frontage where I live! Or six beautiful new pickup trucks with sat nav and leather.

It really puts the lie to their nonsense about being the maestros of guiding capital to its most productive uses, and needing tax cuts to create jobs, and all their other BS.
