Your point is frankly nonsensical and has little connection to how politics works. When the GOP favors gun rights and abortion restrictions, no one ever accuses them of manipulating an entire group by waving a symbol. They say that they’re representing the interests of their voters even when some of those issues hold much greater sway among a certain group than the nation as a whole. That you think that people don’t identify as a group for voting purposes tells me that you actually don’t grasp the nature of politics very well.
This is a non sequitur. The three-fifths clause didn’t give additional votes to anyone except for the slave states in Congress and in the electoral college. The three-fifths clause is about apportioning representatives to Congress. The larger a state’s population, the more representatives it gets in Congress. It was never a question of slaves getting votes; it was about how many representatives a state gets in Congress (and, concomitantly, about how many electoral votes it gets).
Because if McConnell has to negotiate then he’s not showing subservience to Trump. Can’t have that, looks bad. Republicans were/are good at circling the wagons to protect their own.
This is ripe for spin though. McConnell not the boss of his own chamber. McConnell is allowing the Pres. to hurt his fellow Kentuckians. McConnell is up for re-election in 2021.
Good news to see democracy rise to the top of the agenda.
Democratic slogan for 2020: Do you believe in democracy?
I never said that I’m responding very specifically to your assertion that this House bill will (your exact words) “guarantee a max POC turnout”. I’d ask you to not misrepresent my comment. Disagree, fine. But don’t misrepresent.
I’m not accusing you of doing that either. I’m disputing your claim of having done that.
People choose to ignore this:
Of all voters who cast a ballot in the general election, 25 percent were black, Hispanic, Asian, or a member of another minority group. But those voters were 42 percent of those who didn’t vote. Drilling down a little further, black voters made up 11 percent of voters who cast a ballot and 19 percent who didn’t. This disparity really hurt Clinton because black voters (by 82 percentage points) and Hispanic voters (by 40 percentage points) overwhelmingly favored her, while white voters went for Trump by a 16-point margin in the SurveyMonkey poll
I do believe it will guarantee a max turnout. Stuff like this gets people excited to vote. When you see a very diverse House caucus speaking to the people that voted for them and telling them ‘this is how we’re going to deliver for you’ it validates and encourages participation. Somehow you think that’s manipulation, and I think you just have a conflict within yourself regarding the terms ‘persuasion v. manipulation’ that you haven’t figured out yet. That’s your issue to deal with, not mine. The rest of us see this as normal, transactional politics. Voters say they want x. Political party responds. Voters like it. They support the party and it encourages higher participation and loyalty. That’s politics 101.
There was a huge anti-Clinton propaganda effort aimed at black voters. There’s currently a similar anti-dems and anti-voting effort propaganda effort. These propaganda efforts don’t affect everyone, but they can certainly put a finger (or several) on the scale.
Great bill; terrible name. Democrats are supposed to be better at this.
What is wrong with Voting Rights Act of 2018?
Let’s call it what it is and confront head-on the last 5 years of voter suppression.
You’ve put your finger on the underlying problem with the VRA. It created “special” requirements in places with a history of discrimination. That’s been problematic, and has given the right-wing judiciary the opening it needed to strike down some of its provisions. Instead, why not simply say that all changes to voting procedures for national offices require pre-clearance? No uneven application - just establish national requirements that all States must meet.
Nope. I never said that. I said it can plausibly be spun as that. How do I know this? Because I frickin watch it happening ALL the time.
Again, stop misrepresenting me. If you have to misrepresent someone to “prove” you’re right, and they’re wrong, you have both a flawed position and an emotional problem.
Time to call out the referees? Nice cloudy, cold day here.
Yes, I agree. It’s what I said above.
Thanks.
I hope like hell that other POC will have seen the way this president has played to his racist, hateful base and realize that it is neither dirty nor pandering to play to us and to pass legislation with the sole purpose of wooing us as voters. We are worthy of wooing too. Our issues matter just as much as that of rural white people. While I don’t disagree with you, I think part of the problem is that we’ve been told that reaching out to us, that openly pursuing our vote is somehow distasteful while doing the same for soccer moms, WCW voters, suburban white people is encouraged and applauded.
So this is actually an interesting statement. It assumes, of course, that humans are rational actors. That same assumption has been used in stock market analysis where it’s been proven to be stunningly invalid. The rationality level of humans in the context of the 2016 elections would make an interesting study.
Every thing Democrats are doing to make it easier for people to vote is going to be opposed by Mitch. He absolutely hates the idea of every citizen being able to easily vote as well as the notion that every vote counts.
McConnell wasn’t on the ballot here in 2018 and the top of KY tickets were congressional races as we didn’t have any statewide seats up for reelection. But this is the year where shit will get real interesting in KY. All statewide offices are on the ballot and then McConnell is up for reelection next year.
Oh, I’m not saying that at all. What I’m saying (actually what I wrote here in these comments) is that Dems are historically not very good at being attack dogs (in the context of attacking, e.g., McConnell). GOP is good at that. Very good. My point above was that we can potentially use McConnell’s refusal to bring this to the floor against him. But will we?
I also take issue with the idea that there’s this uniform, easily controlled, “POC” block of voters. I find extremely offensive this idea that dems can strut around saying to themselves, well we locked up them blacks, so let’s move to the next thing. It’s this idea that ok, now we’ve guaranteed max turnout from POC I’m objecting to because of how it objectifies and also because of how much it takes for granted without question.
We should do it, and it might help. Might. That’s what I’m saying and I hope that difference is clear.
This, middle age white midwestern Regan Democrats aren’t the only people who deserve to have their votes courted and issues pandered to instead of simply being told to shut up and vote as they are told.
OH. MY. GOD. YES!!! You’re rubbing me in all the right places. Duh Dump is an odious, vile, detestable SOB. But McAsshole Turd Sniffer is all of that and more. There is no RepugnantKlan that I abhor more than Mitch.
- “The best thing that could ever be delivered is crushing McConnell.”
- “…McConnell MUST BE DESTROYED.”
And never to be heard from again. I don’t normally condone violence, I’m a firm believer in sitting down and ironing out your differences with words. BUT! If someone dragged his wrinkly ass up and down the capital I wouldn’t object. I detest that shit filled anal wart. I simply loath him.
