Another variant of the Republican mantra, “I got mine, fuck you”
“Let him own it,” Republican Rep. Mark Hutton said. “It’s his policy that put us there.”
No, dudes – you all fucking own this mess, every single one of you who voted to implement those tax cuts.
Brownback blames the economic sluggishness — the state ranked 43rd in total personal income growth in 2015 — on slumps in agriculture, energy production and aircraft manufacturing.
You lying fucker. Agriculture is going gangbusters and so is energy production in this nation. As to the aircraft manufacturing, I wasn’t aware that was/is a major industry in Kansas, so I can’t speak to it one way or another. Kansas voters had a chance to help right this ship, but they chose to continue on with failed policies – so, ultimately, they are to blame (the ones who voted Republican).
They are taking this action because of deeply-felt princip – oops, because most of them are up for election in November and they sense a wave coming on.
But Scott Drenkard, an economist for the conservative Tax Foundation, told legislators last month that farmers and business owners appeared to pocket the extra money from the state’s recent tax cuts rather than use it for expansion — “tax avoidance, not job creation.”
No kidding? Who could have ever predicted that? Besides everyone who isn’t an idiotic supply sider.
What is even more insane and aggravating is that people want to repeat Brownback’s failures in other states and nationwide. Kansas is supposed to be the experiment that demonstrates the awesomeness of GOP economic strategery. How’s that working out for you?
Arizona’s Governor Doug Ducey is doing his level best to copy Sam Brownback in every detail. Here is a projection concerning corporate tax cuts in Arizona:
Budget year / Without tax cuts /Projected with enacted cuts
2016 / $654 million / $557 million
2017 / $660 million / $466 million
2018 / $649 million / $370 million
2019 / $644 million / $298 million
Source: Joint Legislative BudgetCommittee; projections from state Finance Advisory Committee.
Total projected loss of revenue 2016-2019 = $916 million dollars
I wonder what governor wouldn’t like a windfall of $916 million in his state’s coffers.
Prime members, there’s more on this in the Hive where you can find “Financial Shenanigans in Arizona” a thread that I set up a few days ago.
I think the whole idea of trickle down economics is really just an excuse for crony capitalism. Give your rich supporters huge tax breaks in exchange for campaign donations.
Attempts at trickle down economics have failed so many times in the recent past these GOP governors must know it does not work, but they don’t care. They just want their money.
When Brownback is finally forced to increase revenue, you can be sure as to how he will do it- raise the sales tax and institute “usage fees” for things like parks, libraries, social services, etc.
Politically, this won’t be a problem because most of those affected will not be allowed to vote. Thanks Kris Kobach!
If any of the imbeciles who believe in the supply side fairy did any math, they’d see how absurd it is. Suppose you cut taxes 10%. Instead of bringing in $100M, you bring in $90M. You would then need to increase economic activity by 11% to get back to $100M in tax revenue. Where and when has there have been double digit economic growth? It’s crazy.
Edit : it’s actually worse than this, and more crazy. Suppose you have $1B in economic activity taxed at 25%. That brings in $250M in revenue. If you cut taxes to 20%, then you’d have $200M in revenue. To get back to $250M in revenue at 20%, you’d need $1.25B in economic activity, or 25% growth.
Beachcraft, Cessna, Spirit, and I believe Learjet all have manufacturing facilities in Kansas.
The moves were popular in a Legislature where the GOP holds three-quarters of the seats.
“Let him own it,” Republican Rep. Mark Hutton said. “It’s his policy that put us there.”
Ah, dontcha just love Republican accountability.
Last month, Brownback ordered $17 million in immediate reductions to universities and earlier this month delayed $93 million in contributions to pensions for school teachers and community college employees.
I see Brownback has been studying the Illinois Handbook to Fiscal Solvency.
Gee wiz, who’d a thought that trickle down economics don’t actually work and no one wants to set up business in a state that’s rapidly declining into a third world libertarian paradise?
Well the people of Kansas apparently, but everyone else is pointing and laughing. Maybe if he lays off some more state employees that will fix it!
SO, someone finally asked the most important question about Brownback’s draconian governance.
“cui bono?”
Certainly not Kansas.
SOMEONE profits daily from Sam’s system of neoroyal fealty, but it hasn’t been rank and file Kansans, especially young Kansans.
They are all moving to Colorado.
It is scientifically impossible to tell a Republican that tax cuts do not create jobs. Trickle down economics fantasies are hard-wired into their brains. Facts, even disastrous ones as in Kansas do not tempt them to reconsider their beliefs.
You know…a long time my Grandmother sat me down next to her piano to give a me a talk about elegance. She was s shining example of it. One trait of an elegant person was grace she said. A gracious person knows when it’s unnecessary to point out a mistake. There are other reason one does that.
Squawking about typo’s is just about as inelegant as you can get. We all know, as does thew author that Kansas is the subject. It will be fixed in time…really.
Kentucky and Kansas…are right next to each other on the map.
That would be a no.
one of the more notable and reliable symptoms of Limbaugh/Becks Syndrome…
Those cretins will continue to get a salary and a staff, have had an education and have housing, all in contrast to the situations Kansans have been put in by these same people.
@jimtoday Even using what should be a scary phrase “voodoo economics” (h/t Poppy bush) is not a deterrent.
“in time” would have been before it was published, but if you read the WaPo newsletters and NYTimes, they make many similar errors on their internet publishing, not so much print versions.
Folks, sometimes typos represent people desperate to get the news out, not ignorance or even negligence, if you want the benefits of instant news, you need to appreciate the time constraints these reporters and editors are facing, their first thought is to tell the story, the second, or maybe thrd or fourth, is that it would be spelled perfecly and in perfect context.
NOT!
You can’t have it both ways. Just hit the email notification in the upper corner and send your corrections. We see them too, we just don;t care, we prefer instant news to perfect news.
Count the typos in my post here, I usually go back and change them but not this time.
It’s almost as if cutting revenue leads to less revenue. Weird! Who could have predicted that?
This is why no Democrats should run in the next election in Kansas, Wisconsin, and Indiana. Sounds like an extreme position to take but why should Democrats get the blame for not being able to clean up the Pubbie mess in 4 years when Pubbies have been working for 8 or more years to screw things up? Just look at the ways the Pubbies have helped Obama clean up Bush’s mess, right?
