“Here’s the thing, I fundamentally believe that Democrats cheat, and I don’t believe our side does, and that’s why we need this bill,” Grothman told Allbaugh.

Everything’s the opposite in Rethugloworld.

what’s the over/under on ‘it was taken out of context’ defense?

“These are very serious claims and they require very concrete proof,” Assistant Attorney General Clay Kawski told Judge James D. Peterson.

But a belief in voter fraud does not.

Or “not intended to be a factual statement”

But the latest is what has become a classic Trumpism and his “tell” when he’s lying: “I don’t know anything about it. This is the first I’m hearing of it. I’ll have to look into it.” He says it all the time now.

we can tell when it’s ‘not intended to be a factual statement’ because their lips move…

So Mr. Attorney General, if someone is in the room and witnesses something in front of their nose, that’s the basis of “hearsay”.
Someone missed their first day of Evidence at law school.
Unreal.

According to Allbaugh’s testimony Monday

Here’s the thing, he said it under oath so if someone can prove him wrong or impeach his testimony, they’re basically calling him a perjurer. Has Grothman and the other GOP legislators been put under oath and questioned on the stand? And if not, why not? Gawd, I hope there’s a recording somewhere of Allbaugh’s account.

The truth will out.
And these are the type of people, along with an un-recalled “Governor” who the people of that state have freely chosen to represent them.
It may be cold, but I continue to believe that having made these choices, the people of that state need to learn that elections have consequences, What you are seeing in this sad affair is part and parcel of those consequences.
Now it may be that the next time election day comes around that the lesson may well have sunken into the denser layers. Democrats and Progressives MAY turn out, but I doubt it. This is because they have yet to learn that not voting on election day is also a form of casting a ballot and can carry consequences just the same. If the people have genuine control over their democracy, let them change it for the better. If they choose not to do so, let them live with the consequences.

Ironically, as long as republicans do this kind of thing just to entrench their party’s power, it’s nominally legal. (That ruling has been made repeatedly on gerrymandering.) But as soon as someone points to a majority-minority area and says the law will have a great impact there and they’re happy about it, that bell can’t be unrung.

That was my thought. Allbaugh took the stand. They didn’t.

The state Attorney General’s office, which is defending the law, dismissed the testimony as “hearsay”

The state Attorney General is bad at his job. Allbaugh was present at the meeting, therefore his testimony about what happened at the meeting is not hearsay.

“Opponents say”? Really? The disenfranchisement is documented in several places. Both sides of the argument are not equally honest.

“Here’s the thing, I fundamentally believe that Democrats cheat, and I don’t believe our side does, and that’s why we need this bill,”

That’s a sincerely held belief. Like “Noah had dinosaurs on the ark,” and “Jesus taught Lee Greenwood to sing.” You don’t have any right to question that shit, or interfere with him acting on it.

"dismissed the testimony as “hearsay”

Nope. Not being offered for the truth of what it says, just the fact of it being said and as a statement of present intention and belief. It goes to motive, which goes to the likelihood that they were deliberately attempting to disenfranchise certain voting blocs.

The Republicans are despicable when they do these sort of things. It’s just another form of nullification. I have relatives who say they prefer that uneducated people and minorities aren’t able to vote. Horrible people.

“We could do that. We could get a million dollars. But that would be wrong.”

I suppose they want to go back to the good old days when only white, male land owners could vote.

That WOULD be the ideal to these folks.

I have relatives who say they prefer that uneducated people and minorities aren’t able to vote.

That we undoubtedly benefit liberal candidates. Think of the vast swath of red state voters who would be eliminated.

I am an independent but there are three reasons why in the current election season I cannot vote for a single Republican: (1) voter suppression, (2) inability to pass a reasonable gun bill, (3) stupid reasons to keep people poor by not increasing the minimum wage.

Exactly right. This is not being offered for the truth of the matter asserted. It is evidence of their state of mind and of the impression on the listener.
